Betsey is a girl’s name of Hebrew origin. It originated as a nickname for Elizabeth, the anglicized form of Elisheva, which means “God is my oath” or “God’s promise.” This classic biblical name has endless variants and shortened forms, including Elisabeth, Isobel, Eliza, Liz, Beth, Betty and Liza as well as Betsey. However, Betsey has a cute retro feel that’s sure to make baby seem even more adorable. Charles Dickens used the name in two of his novels, David Copperfield and The Pickwick Papers.
