Aegidus

Aegidus is a masculine Swiss name. Derived from the Greek word _aigís_, it literally translates to “goatskin.” It’s meant to refer to the shield used by the Greek gods Athena and Zeus. The shield or the _aegis_ was believed to have been made from goatskin. Therefore, Aegidus can also be interpreted as “the protecting.” Greek mythology may have had the Swiss in its grip soon after the Napoleonic Wars when Tsar Alexander I sent a young Greek diplomat to shape Switzerland into a neutral country. Choosing this moniker for baby is one way to protect them from evil and shield them against all possible dangers in life.
