Yoto Mini Speakers for Kids Recalled Due to Burn Hazard
After initially recalling its popular Mini speakers for kids in April 2024, Yoto has reissued a recall to parents about the device’s potential hazards and is now offering a free battery replacement kit for affected customers. Here’s what you need to know.
Why are the Yoto Mini speakers for Kids being recalled?
In April 2024, Yoto recalled over 250,000 Mini speakers designed for kids aged 3–12. The portable, screen-free speaker—used to play audiobooks, music, radio, and podcasts—was found to have an issue with its lithium-ion battery. The battery could overheat during charging, posing burn and fire hazards.
Initially, Yoto advised parents to replace the charging cord, but additional complaints have since been reported. Some devices overheated even when used with the replacement cord, prompting Yoto to issue a free battery replacement kit. To date, Yoto has received nine reports from U.S. customers and one from a U.K. customer regarding overheating or melting, though no injuries have been reported.
How do I know if my product is affected by the recall?
The recall includes Yoto Mini speakers sold between November 2021 and April 2024, identifiable by SKU PRPLXX00860. The speakers are pale gray with orange tactile controls and a pixel display. Yoto Minis were sold online through us.yotoplay.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, and Maisonette.com, as well as in toy and gift stores nationwide.
What should I do if my product is recalled?
The good news is you don’t need to throw away your Yoto Mini. Yoto is offering a free battery replacement kit for all Mini speakers manufactured between 2021 and 2023, even if you already received the Smart Cable as part of the previous recall. Affected customers will be contacted via email and the Yoto app with instructions to request the kit.
In the meantime, Yoto advises parents to immediately remove affected speakers from children’s use and properly dispose of the lithium battery. You can request your replacement battery kit and find more information about the recall at us.yotoplay.com/recall.
