Maternal Mortality Rates Are Rising—This Is What a World Without Moms Looks Like
The world takes moms for granted, especially in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report earlier this week to highlight the abysmal maternal mortality rates across the country. The worst part? It says three in five of the pregnancy-related deaths could have been prevented. Needless to say, we’re failing our moms.
Hoping to make an impact, The Rockefeller Foundation launched its powerful #WithoutMom campaign. To kick it off, it shared an emotional clip to show how so many of our greatest achievements are all thanks to moms. The video features footage of celebrities, politicians, graduates and others reaching defining moments in their lives and tearfully thanking their moms for helping them get there.
Pakistani women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai says, “Thank you to my mother for inspiring me to always speak the truth.” Daily Show host Trevor Noah speaks about how most people take moms for granted. “I never thought it was about my mom,” he says. “I think most of us believe that we’re the heroes of our story.” And a clip of former First Lady Michelle Obama gives credit where credit’s due, saying, “There is no way I would be standing up straight on my feet if it weren’t for my mom.”
Through the campaign, the Rockefeller Foundation hopes to raise awareness and prevent maternal deaths. “Mothers fight for us their whole lives,” it says. “Now is the time to fight for moms.”
