We’ve seen a lot of unique baby keepsake ideas, but this new trend is in a league of its own.

Umbilical cord jewelry is the latest fad that has parents talking. And while some would prefer to skip this craze altogether, lots of moms are totally on board.

Once baby is born, parents are advised to care for their newborn’s umbilical cord stump until it naturally falls off on its own. After that happens, mom and baby part ways with what was their lifeline for the last nine months.

For some, it’s a bittersweet farewell. That’s where umbilical cord jewelry comes in. In fact, many jewelry designers specialize in this specific trade. Take, Ruth Avra, who told the New York Post about her “lightending bolt” idea to make use out of her baby’s umbilical cord stump shortly after it fell off.

After Avra transformed the stump into a necklace, she did the same for other mothers who wanted to hold on to their child’s umbilical cord forever. Soon enough, the trend started to take off and she designed tons of different umbilical cord looks.

The mom and jewelry maker isn’t alone. A handful of others have had the same unique idea, creating custom necklaces, rings and more.

If you want a way to cherish the memories, but aren’t feeling the latest fad, look no further than these adorable baby keepsakes.
