What’s even more exciting than hearing about a real-life crazy birth story? Hearing it from a former SNL comedien. Lucky for us, Seth Meyers and his wife, Alexi Ashe, welcomed baby no. 2 on Sunday—in their apartment building’s lobby. And his dramatic retelling on Late Night With Seth Meyers doesn’t hold back any details.

The first thing you need to know? This isn’t their first time experiencing a very quickly-progressing labor. Meyers says two years ago, they were worried Ashe was going to give birth to their first son during the Uber ride to the hospital, but ultimately made it with 20 minutes to spare. This time, they knew the drill, and had everything under control.

Spoiler: Nope.

After a leisurely Sunday spent at brunch and in the park, Ashe was feeling a little off.

“We’re thinking, today’s the day; we’re going to work our way to the hospital,” Meyers says. But his wife’s contractions were 20 minutes apart. They had plenty of time.

Nope.

As he was feeding their son lunch, his mother-in-law came flying down the stairs, saying, “WE HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, NOW.”

Again, Meyers knew the drill; they probably had a minimum of 20 minutes. Plenty of time!

Nope.

“We basically get to the steps of our building—we’re in the lobby and we’re walking out the steps—and my wife just says, ‘I can’t get in that car; I’m gonna have the baby right now. The baby is coming.’”

Meyers told her she’d be fine. Their doula, who was with them at this point, told her she’d be fine. But the baby’s head was out.

“She looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants. Like someone was trying to sneak a baby on a plane,” Meyers says, giggling. “I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We’re about to have a baby…we’re having a baby…we had a baby.’”

Soon enough, firefighters had arrived in the lobby to cut the cord and give Ashe some oxygen. Neighbors sprung into action to get mom and baby some warm blankets, and Meyers credits his doormen with keeping the situation under control.

Add it to the list of our crazy labor and delivery stories. And congratulations to the couple on their new baby boy, Axel.
