This Is the Unique Name Princess Eugenie Chose for Her Newborn Son
Updated February 2021
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have revealed the name they chose for their newborn son: August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.
The couple announced the news similarly to how they announced the birth: with a sweet Instagram post. In the photos, the new parents are seen smiling and holding their new bundle of joy. “We wanted to introduce you to August Philip Hawke Brooksbank,” Eugenie wrote in the caption. “Thank you for so many wonderful messages. Our hearts are full of love for this little human, words can’t express. We are excited to be able to share these photos with you.”
She credited her midwife as the photographer of the photos, continuing, “Thank you to the wonderful essential workers including our midwife who came to discharge our boy.”
While the name may seem a little unusual for the royal family, it pays tribute to the monarchy. “He is named after his great grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers,” Eugenie wrote in her Instagram stories. “On his grandfather’s birthday weekend, thinking of my grandfather, we are introducing our little boy."
August—the same name new mom Mandy Moore also chose for her baby boy—honors Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, whose middle name was Augustus, while Philip honors the Duke of Edinburgh, the 99-year-old great-grandfather of the newborn.
Buckingham Palace also released a statement sharing the couple was “delighted to share this first photograph as a family.” Sarah Ferguson, Princess Eugenie’s mother, also tweeted, “He is a beautiful blessing and a bringer of such love and joy to all our Family. I am so proud of Jack and Eugenie, they are and will be wonderful parents.”
The new parents announced the news earlier this month that they had welcomed a baby boy, weighing in just over 8 pounds, on February 9. They opted to share the announcement through a black-and-white photo of her newborn holding his parents’ hands.
“Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie was safely delivered of a son today, 9th February 2021, at 8: 55 a.m. at The Portland Hospital,” the palace announced at the time. “The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of York, Sarah, Duchess of York, and Mr. and Mrs. George Brooksbank have been informed and are delighted with the news. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”
This is the ninth grandchild for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and the first for Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
Princess Eugenie announced she and her husband were expecting a baby back in September 2020, taking to social media to share the news. She posted a sweet picture of the couple holding a pair of fuzzy bear booties. "Jack and I are so excited for early 2021,” she wrote in the caption.
Eugenie, 30, and Jack, 34, wed at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle (where Meghan and Harry also got married) in October 2018. The couple met while skiing in Switzerland and currently live at Ivy Cottage, near Prince William and Kate Middleton, on the grounds of Kensington Palace.
