Planters Nuts Recalled Due to Listeria Contamination Risk
The life of an expecting parent can be a little more complicated. Outside of a growing bump, swollen ankles and a slew of other pregnancy symptoms, a mom-to-be also becomes more susceptible to diseases and infections. One such bacteria that can cause particular havoc in the bodies of expectant moms—Listeria.
On May 3, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of two kinds of popular Planters nuts due to a risk of Listeria monocytogenes contamination. According to the voluntary recall by the manufacturer Hormel Foods Sales, the two affected items include 4 oz. packages of Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts and 8.75 oz. cans of Planters Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts. The products in question were shipped to Publix distribution warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina and to Dollar Tree distribution warehouses in South Carolina and Georgia.
To identify if your package of Planters Peanuts or Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts may be a part of the recall, you can refer to the “Best if Used By Date” located on the bottom of the Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts can and top of the Honey Roasted Peanuts package, and the UPC code located on the side of the can and within the barcode of the Honey Roasted Peanuts package.

- PLANTERS Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts, UPC:2900001621, Best By Date: 05APR26
While, thankfully, there have been no reports of illness related to this recall, it’s important to stay vigilant. According to the CDC, pregnant people are 10 times more likely to contract severe illness from listeria (known as listeriosis) than non-pregnant people due to their weakened immune systems. Once contracted, symptoms from listeriosis usually start within two weeks. Pregnant people typically experience only fever, fatigue and muscle aches. However, in severe cases, Listeria can cause pregnancy loss or premature birth and can cause serious illness or death in newborns.
If you have purchased any of the above recalled items, the FDA encourages you to immediately throw them out or return it to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund.
