Passengers Rally to Help Woman Deliver Baby on New York Subway
New York’s subway system is no stranger to surprises, but few are as life-changing as this. When a pregnant woman suddenly went into labor aboard the W train, commuters didn’t hesitate—they stepped in to help, turning an ordinary commute into a ‘miracle on 34th street.’
It was a typical weekday commute on the W train when, upon arriving at the 34th Street–Herald Square station, a passenger suddenly announced that she was pregnant and about to give birth. Fellow riders sprang into action, alerting the train conductor to stop the train and call emergency services.
Before first responders could arrive, the baby was ready to make her debut. A few passengers stepped in to assist, helping the woman safely deliver her baby right there in the subway car. One passenger even offered his pocket knife so the makeshift delivery team could cut the umbilical cord. Shortly after, emergency medical services arrived and transported both mother and baby to the hospital, where they are reportedly in good condition.
NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow applauded the bystanders’ action and compassion. “This is another example of New Yorkers coming together to help each other, assisted by caring transit workers and other responders, reflecting the best of the subway community and this city,” Crichlow said.
“We are thrilled that both mother and Baby W are doing well and look forward to welcoming them back aboard for a lifetime of reliable—and hopefully less dramatic—rides,” he added.
