These Are the Most Popular Baby Names Around the World
People around the world may differ widely, but it turns out there’s quite a lot we all have in common, especially when it comes to baby names. A report compiled by LetterSolver has revealed the most popular girl and boy names in each country. While some countries certainly shine with unique names, there are quite a few common threads running across the globe.
Times have changed, and names in many countries have evolved, but certain faith-based mainstays remain the most popular common threads linking countries like Brazil, Algeria and Portugal. For girls, variations of Maria, Marie and Mia, all derived from the Hebrew Miryam, are the most popular names in 17 countries. These names are commonly linked to the Virgin Mary, who’s considered one of the most sacred figures in the Christian and Muslim faiths.
When it comes to boy names, variations on Mohammed—an Arabic moniker that means “praiseworthy”—are the most popular, taking the top spot in ten countries. An estimated yet ever-growing 150 million people bear the name Muhammad, which varies in spelling from place to place. Muhammad translates to “praiseworthy” and links directly to the founder of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad. In second place, the Christian Old Testament character Noah remains the most popular in seven countries, including most of Western Europe.
Across Europe, other popular girl names include Sophia, Emma and Olivia. For boys, Leo and Luka top the charts. If you are perhaps in search of a more unique name, countries like Armenia’s Davit and Nare and Australia’s Isla and Oliver offer good alternatives.
