Meet the “Mombies” Raising Money for Cancer Research
Moms can do just about anything—even make the undead look good!
One group of Connecticut moms has recently gone viral for their do-good spooky tradition. Each Halloween since 2016, a group of “Mombies” or Mom-Zombies has gotten together to perform an undead dance in their neighborhood to raise money for The Cancer Couch Foundation, which fights metastatic breast cancer.
The Mombies were founded by Terry Davis, who decided it would be fun to have a flash mob of moms-turned-zombies perform Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in their neighborhood as a surprise on Halloween. “We are a collective of moms shedding our everyday persona to transform into ghastly zombies, taking to the streets for a purpose greater than ourselves,” Davis writes on the Mombies website.
“Casting aside fears, we venture beyond comfort zones as we dance to raise funds for breast cancer research. Each performance is a fusion of fun, community, and support, creating lasting memories and meaningful contributions to an important cause.”
Several of the Mombies have fought against breast cancer, with one Mombie currently fighting and practicing during chemo treatments, according to the Mombie website. Yale oncology nurses also helped out as backup dancers this year!
The group’s 2023 dance recently went viral on TikTok, with several commenters applauding the group and asking how they could get involved. "In all my 21 years of existence in Ct I AINT EVER HEARD OF MOMBIES AND I WANT TO BE ONE,” wrote one mom. “Wait they’re so good and in sync!” Added another.
Others asked how they could join the Mombies in giving back. “I literally live in Fairfield county, a cancer survivor and my husband being treated for cancer, would love to support this,” wrote one user. For those looking to give back the Mombies are currently hosting an online shop for a cause event with Kendra Scott. Now through November 2, when you enter the code GIVEBACK-MOMBIES23 at checkout Kendra Scott will donate 20 percent of the purchase to The Cancer Couch Foundation. You can also donate directly to the cause at Mombies.org.
