An Australia mom was left covered in severe bruises after she and her baby were trapped in a hail storm and she had no choice but to shield her daughter with her body.

Fiona Simpson had no idea what she was getting herself into when she decided to take her 4-month-old daughter and grandmother to grab coffee last week, she tells The Project. While en route, mother nature let loose a dangerous hail storm, and Simpson’s mom instincts quickly went into action.

“I’ve learnt my lesson today, never drive in a hail storm,” the mother warns in a Facebook post. “We parked on the side of the road when the storm got to heavy and the hail blew out our windows. I covered my infant with my body to stop her from getting badly injured.”

Simpson hopes her cautionary tale will be a lessen for others to be careful while driving during storms. The mom posted her story on Facebook, sharing gruesome pictures to show the effects of the hail storm on her body. As a result, the mom’s face, arm and back is covered in large, black-and-blue bruises and welts.

“I’m just so relieved that my daughter and grandmother are alright,” she says.

Many have commented to send messages of hope for a quick recovery, and to commend the mama for thinking fast and doing whatever it took to protect her baby.

“This gave me goosebumps! I’m so sorry you had to experience that, but you are so brave,” one note reads.

“I’m so glad you’re both ok! You deserve a Mother of the Year award for your actions in protecting your daughter,” says another.

“How terrifying! But look at those mama instincts kicking in straight away! Even though you [are] so sore and upset, you should be so proud of yourself,” a well-wisher says.

When it comes to their kids, parents will do anything to keep them out of harm’s way. One dad also proved the power of love when he cushioned his son’s fall from a balcony, ultimately saving the boy’s life.
