Mom’s Viral Post Puts Incompetent Dad Stereotype on Blast
We all know the stereotype. You see it in comic strips, cartoons, articles and social media posts across the Internet: Dads can’t change diapers, dads can’t multitask, dads don’t know how to feed their own kids. But one mom blogger is drawing the line, and her post about why she refuses to mock dads is resonating with parents everywhere.
Kristina Kuzmic—known for her comedic parenting videos on YouTube—has been asked a few times to create videos making fun of fathers. But in a Facebook post that has already garnered more than 22,000 reactions, she explains why she’s not down with wringing humor out of the dated idea that dads are incompetent fools when it comes to raising kids. Her top three reasons:
1. For the same reason I wouldn’t mock moms. I’m rooting for all parents.
2. Because I don’t think mocking people will make them step-up and do a better job. It will only cause them to do even less. (As I’ve said before: Feeling like a loser has never helped anyone thrive in life.)
3. I have sons who might someday decide to be dads, and I refuse to create any content that would make my boys think that men are less capable than women of being great parents or homemakers.
Amen to that! No parent is perfect, as Kuzmic points out. Sure, our parenting mishaps can make for comedy gold, but painting a portrait of dads as totally inept does them—and our children—a huge disservice. “If men talked about moms the way women talk about dads, it would be considered completely unacceptable,” she says. “So let’s make it unacceptable to label an entire gender as inadequate.”
Her message is resonating with thousands and has even helped people see the error of their ways. “I’m ashamed to say I have not been kind with my comments when comparing notes with other mums, but after reading this I will do better,” one commenter says.
As Kuzmic says, “dads, please know that you matter!” Hear, hear.
