Mercari, an online marketplace for buying and selling used items, recently launched Merchat AI, a new conversational shopping assistant powered by ChatGPT. The sophisticated chatbot can comb through millions of gently-used clothing items using your exact specifications in seconds to provide real-time recommendations.
This technology goes beyond what you could type in your standard search bar to provide the kind of insight you’d expect from a conversation with a human brick-and-mortar shop assistant. To see what it could do, I personally tried out the new Merchat AI and asked it to find some “cute Mother’s Day outfits for my daughter from Janie & Jack.” With a few questions about size and style, the AI-powered tool provided several categories of options many at a quarter of the cost of new items.
Merchat AI was also able to easily suggest “trendy summer vacations for my son, 4T.” From graphic tees and cargos to printed button-up shirt and short sets, the recommendations weren’t only spot on for current trends but also spot on with my style the more I interacted with the bot.

While Merchat is still learning in its Beta stage, and there may be some inaccuracies and inconsistencies in its conversations and search results, it still functions as a fantastic tool for parents looking to quickly sift through thrifted items to find trendy clothing for their quickly-growing little ones.
