Margot Robbie to Star in Upcoming Live-Action Barbie Movie
Come on Margie, let’s go party.
The buzzed about Barbie movie is once again moving forward with its plans, and will feature Margot Robbie as the iconic blonde doll. The actress will also co-produce the film under her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, Variety reports.
“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery,” Robbie said in a statement. “Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I’m so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide.”
The film, which was originally supposed to premiere last summer, has been pushed back to a May 2020 release date, EW reports.
The Aussie’s involvement in the film follows a string of prior plans that never saw the light. Amy Schumer left the project back in 2017 due to scheduling conflicts, according to Variety, and shortly after, Anne Hathaway was rumored to portray Barbie in the film, The Hollywood Reporter says.
Not much else is known about the plot of the film, but we can only hope the storyline will follow the same shift the Barbie brand has made in recent years. With more aspiring career storylines and unique body types than ever before, Barbie also uses her vlog to start a conversation on important topics for kids, like bullying, being sad and even gender inequality in the workforce.
