Lucy Liu Shares Her Surrogacy Journey and Unique Path to Parenthood
Becoming a parent is a special and exciting experience, but it can also come with unique challenges. Actress Lucy Liu recently opened up about her journey to motherhood, revealing that she chose surrogacy to have her 7-year-old son, Rockwell. At the age of 46, Liu became a first-time mother and hopes her story will inspire others who may be struggling with fertility or contemplating alternative ways to start a family.
In a recent cover interview with The Cut, Liu shared how she navigated the process of surrogacy and why she decided to expand her family. “I didn’t have a plan. I just thought, I want to change the conversation a little bit. I didn’t want to talk about the next project. I felt like I was reading the same script. I got tired of it. I didn’t want the same dialogue. I’d heard myself say the same things many, many times and just thought, Well, this can’t be what’s next. It wasn’t enough,” she told The Cut.
“I didn’t mull it over too much. I didn’t do a lot of research, I just pulled the trigger. I can think myself out of something easily; if I think too much I won’t do it. It’s better for me to feel something and just go for it. A lot of people read books about parenting. I didn’t do any of that. I was like, When the child is here, I’m just going to figure it out.”
While the actress previously called Hollywood home when it came time to raise her kid she turned to New York. “I definitely wanted to raise a kid in New York. People will say, ‘It’s not convenient, you don’t even have a car,’ but this way, they’re going to see all the things. You’re going to show them what’s safe and what’s not, and they’re going to understand that through experience. It’s hard to build common sense when you’re in a car all the time. They’re going to smell the smells,” she joked.
When it comes to her surrogacy journey the Set it Up star previously shared with People that she chose surrogacy because “It just seemed like the right option for me because I was working and I didn’t know when I was going to be able to stop,” she said. “I decided that was probably the best solution for me, and it turned out to be great.”
Liu’s journey to motherhood is a reminder that there are many paths to parenthood, and it’s important to find the one that works best for you and your family. Learn more about surrogacy, adoption and alternative ways to parenthood here.
