Toy packaging as we know it is about to get an environmental refresh. At least toys from Hasbro, that is. The company plans to begin phasing out plastic from new product packaging, including polybags, elastic bands, shrink wrap, window sheets and blister packs, according to its news release. The goal is to eliminate virtually all plastic in packaging for new products by the end of 2022.

“We have an experienced, cross-functional team in place to manage the complexity of this undertaking and will look to actively engage employees, customers and partners as we continue to innovate and drive progress as a leader in sustainability,” says Brian Goldner, chairman and CEO of Hasbro.

In recent years, Hasbro has made moves to change its footprint on the planet. In 2010, the company eliminated wire ties, and it added How2Recycle labeling in 2016. Most recently, it launched a toy recycling program with TerraCycle. Phasing out plastic packaging is no small feat, but it’s one the company is ready to tackle.

“Reimagining and redesigning packaging across our brand portfolio is a complex undertaking, but we believe it’s important and our teams are up for the challenge,” says John Frascotti, president and chief operating officer of Hasbro. “We know consumers share our commitment to protecting the environment, and we want families to feel good knowing that our packaging will be virtually plastic-free, and our products can be easily recycled through our Toy Recycling Program with TerraCycle”

Taking the steps to protect our environment is more important now than ever before. Choosing eco-friendly products and reducing the amount of resources used is beneficial for all, but especially your children or babies-to-be. You can take simple steps during pregnancy, such as changes in the foods you eat and the products you use. Admittedly, sometimes the most environmentally correct options may not always seem like the most practical, but remember, baby steps add up.
