Harmful Bacteria Found in Crecelac Goat Milk Infant Formula, FDA Says
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety advisement to parents after the dangerous bacteria Cronobacter sakazakii was found in Crecelac Powdered Goat Milk Infant Formula.
The formula, made by Dairy Manufacturers Inc., was recalled on May 24 along with the company’s Farmalac BABY Powdered Infant Formula because of a failure to meet the FDA’s infant formula regulations. According to the notice FDA officials identified Cronobacter sakazakii in a sample of Crecelac Infant Powdered Goat Milk Infant Formula collected from a retail store in Texas. Limited sampling of the Farmalac products did not detect Cronobacter; but the FDA notes that Dairy Manufacturers Inc. has yet to submit the required premarket notification to demonstrate the safety and nutritional adequacy of the Farmalac formula.
Cronobacter is the same bacteria that was at the center of Abbott Nutrition’s factory shutdown in February of 2022. The bacteria can cause rare but life-threatening infections in newborns.
The FDA and Dairy Manufacturers Inc. assure parents that no illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall, and it is likely most of the product that was distributed in the U.S. has already been taken off of shelves. Out of an abundance of caution, the FDA asks caregivers to discard any affected batches.
You can find step-by-step details on how to tell if you have an affected can within the FDA’s recall notice. Parents with affected cans can reach out to Dairy Manufacturs Inc. with questions may contact the company at 1-972-347-2341.
Crecelac and Farmalac are both speciality formulas and thus the FDA does not suspect that this recall will have a major impact on overal formula supply.
