Elaine Welteroth Welcomes Baby No. 2 and Makes Big Announcement
Award-winning author and TV personality Elaine Welteroth has welcomed her second child—and, in true trailblazing fashion, she’s using this moment to give back in a big way.
“And then there were four! Welcome to the world, baby boy SantiGold Singletary. Our hearts are full. Our family is complete,” Welteroth captioned her announcement of her baby boy’s arrival. “Grateful beyond to our incredible midwives Kim and Allegra @kindredspacela for holding space for us through another peaceful, sacred home birth that has expanded my understanding of how transcendent growing and giving life can be. Still processing the magic of that beautiful day…”
In tandem with her son’s arrival, Welteroth revealed that her nonprofit, birthFUND, will provide 41 new families with midwifery care in 2025. These families will join birthFUND’s orginal cohort of 10, bringing the total to over 50 families receiving midwifery care. This initiative stems from her own transformative experiences with midwives and her commitment to ensuring others have access to safe, affirming maternal care.
Welteroth has been a steadfast advocate for maternal health equity, drawing from her first pregnancy’s challenges in finding quality support. That journey inspired the creation of birthFUND, a movement dedicated to expanding access to midwifery care nationwide. Since its launch in April 2024, birthFUND has raised over $1.5 million with support from founding funders like Serena Williams, Kelly Rowland, and Karlie Kloss, as well as major partners like SoFi, Pampers, BabyList, and a generous grant from The Gates Foundation.
The resurgence in midwifery care and doulas comes amid increasing efforts to address the United States’ alarming maternal mortality rate—the highest among wealthy nations. Black women, in particular, face disproportionate risks, dying at three to four times the rate of white women during childbirth. With nonprofits like birthFUND, 4kira4moms and federal investments in the U.S. Maternal Mortality Action Plan, there’s hope for a better, more inclusive path forward.
"I started with the mantra ‘It’s on us to save us,’ " Welteroth said in a recent interview with People. “And I’m just so, so proud of our team, and that we’re able to show up for women and families, especially in this moment now where we are seeing the system failing families. I’m really heartened and hopeful.”
