Worldwide Campaign Aims to Transform How Media Portrays Women, Moms
Traditional stock photos are in a desperate need of a refresh. The bulk of these images are used in the media and for advertisements, but don’t really hit it home when it comes to inclusivity and representation of females. Dove’s #ShowUs campaign is on a mission to put an end to this. The personal care brand teamed up with Getty Images and Girlgaze, a community of non-binary and female-identifying photographers, to change the narrative.
Together, the three companies are giving females the power to define beauty on their own terms. The end result is the world’s largest collection of imagery which portrays women exactly as they want to be seen in front of and behind the camera. #ShowUs includes 5,000 images and counting across 39 countries showing a range of different ages, races, shapes, sizes and gender expressions. All of the photos are unfiltered, and weren’t taken on staged sets. The initiative also puts an emphasis on pregnant women and moms who often aren’t portrayed doing normal, everyday activities.
In an effort to ensure its photo archive covers every type of person, Dove and its partners are calling on you to share images of yourself on social media to #ShowUs how you want to be seen. It’s up to us to show women everywhere a more inclusive vision of beauty, so they can show the world what they’re really made of.
