Cybex Car Seats Recalled Due to Potential Harness Issues
Cybex has issued a voluntary recall of more than 24,000 of its Aton G car seats. Here’s what you need to know.
Why are certain Cybex Anton G car seats being recalled?
Cybex has issued a recall for select models of its Aton G and Aton G Swivel car seats due to a problem with the harness system. Following a customer complaint and further investigation—including reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration—Cybex discovered that if the seat is slid or scraped over a sharp edge, such as a countertop or the edge of the Aton G Swivel Base, the harness anchorage hooks can bend. If this occurs, the harness anchor pin may become dislodged when the seat is not in use.
Cybex emphasizes that when a child is secured in the harness, the anchor pin cannot come loose. Additionally, caregivers are likely to notice any harness detachment when securing a child and checking harness tightness. However, if the harness anchor pin is missing, the harness will detach from the seat at the hip anchor. In the event of a crash, a detached harness would fail to properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury. No injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled car seats.
How do I know if my product is affected by the recall?
The recall affects any Aton G car seat, Aton G Swivel car seat, EOS and Aton G Travel System or EOS and Aton G Swivel Travel System manufactured between February 20, 2023 and May 10, 2024 in the US. You can locate the manufacturer date and model number on the bottom of your car seat. Once you have this you can check to see if your car seat is a part of the recall on the Cybex recall website.
What should I do if I have a recalled Cybex car seat?
The good news for parents with Cybex car seats is that they won’t need to replace them. Cybex is providing all owners of recalled car seats with a free remedy kit. The kit includes a device that locks the harness and harness anchor pin in place—even if the harness anchor retention hooks are bent—along with instructions for installation. While waiting for the remedy kit, caregivers can continue using the Aton 6 and Aton 6 Swivel infant car seats, provided they check the harness anchor retention hooks for any damage before each use. If any hooks are bent away from the harness anchor pin, Cybex advises discontinuing use immediately and contacting the company for assistance.
