Bringing a new life into the world is a momentous occasion, and with it can come a monumental price tag. In the United States, the average birth without insurance can cost between $11,000 and $17,000. This cost can vary based on whether you deliver vaginally or via c-section, what kind of insurance you have and surprisingly, location. The state you give birth in can make a big difference with neighboring states like New York and New Jersey having an almost $2,000 difference in cost.

To discover which states are most and least expensive to give birth, researchers from the Health Care Cost Institute examined the average costs of childbirth across different US states. The results yielded some surprises, with Nebraska taking the top spot for most expensive average out-of-pocket costs at $2,685 and Michigan with the least expensive out-of-pocket costs at $974.
