Whether you’re gearing up for your baby’s first birthday or preparing to celebrate your three-nager’s big day, you might quickly realize that the little things—from [invitations] to decorations and goody bags—can add up fast. If you feel like birthday parties today are more expensive than they used to be, you’re not alone. With social media heightening the pressure to throw bigger, better, and more photo-worthy celebrations, costs are rapidly increasing.

A new study by Everyday Health Group reveals that parents today spend an average of nearly $314 on their child’s birthday party (excluding gifts). The survey, which polled 404 women aged 18 to 44 who are either pregnant or have at least one child up to 5 years old, found that millennial parents spent about $50 more than Gen Z moms, with first- and second-year parties costing an average of $279. These costs steadily increased as children grew older, with parents spending an average of $344 on birthdays for six- to ten-year-olds.

Despite the $314 average, birthday party expenditures varied widely. Fourteen percent of parents reported spending less than $100, while 20 percent said they spent more than $500 per celebration. This wide range aligns with what you’re likely to see on social media, where parents often debate in the comments on TikTok, Instagram, and beyond about the importance of saving or splurging.

“Having a dinner and cake with family is still a birthday party. Just with an inclusive guest list,” commented one parent on a viral TikTok after a mom explained that she’d no longer be throwing birthday parties for her daughter, choosing to do intimate family celebrations instead. “I love splurging on my son’s birthday! It’s fun for me, all of his friends and everyone. Totally worth whatever cost,” added another parent.

Whatever way you choose to celebrate, remember that this day is all about your little one and your family—nothing else really matters! Need some help getting started with that first celebration? Check out these tips for throwing baby’s first birthday party.
