‘Grey's Anatomy' Star Shares Sweet Photo of Daughter for Down Syndrome Awareness
Actress Caterina Scorsone took to social media to remind us why “differences are beautiful.”
The Grey’s Anatomy actress shared an adorable photo of her daughter Paloma to celebrate Down syndrome awareness month.
“October is Down syndrome awareness month. Here’s a little info: 1 in 700 babies is born with Down syndrome,” she shares.
Scorsone also wants to clear up a few inconsistencies often arising when people talk about the genetic disorder.
“Language is important. Parents don’t have a 1 in 700 ‘risk’ of having a baby with Down syndrome. Parents have a 1 in 700 ‘chance’ of having a baby with Down syndrome, just like they have a 50 percent ‘chance’ of having a girl and a 50 percent ‘chance’ of having a boy (With some beautiful variations in there as well),” she explains.
The actress leaves her followers with one powerful message: “Differences are beautiful. Language changes how people think. Words are important.”
Fellow parents of kids with Down syndrome used it as an opportunity to show their support and spread kind words.
“I celebrate this month with you as I also have a child with Down syndrome and he is the biggest blessing in my life! He has taught us about such an unconditional and selfless love there are no words to really describe it. He is my world,” one mom shares.
“I’m so glad to see the amazing response to this post, it gives me hope for the world and hope that all children will be loved and not silenced, included instead of excluded and treated equally to all their peers,” supports another.
Instead of dwelling on what makes people different, it’s time we celebrate those differences. After a mom whose son has autism came to this revelation, she staged an incredible photo shoot to honor all his unique qualities.
