WNBA’s Brittney Griner Welcomes Her First Baby Ahead of Olympics
The USA Women’s Basketball team’s newest fan has arrived!
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner has offically welcomed her first child alongside her wife and lawyer, Cherelle Griner. In an exclusive interview with We Need to Talk Griner shared the news of her son’s arrival. "He’s here. Yes, 7/8/24. 7 pounds, 8 ounces. Yeah, that’s my man. He is amazing. They say you know as soon as you see him it just like everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window and that’s literally what happened,” Griner told Terrika Foster-Brasby.
“It kind of sucks because I gotta leave but at the same time, but he’ll understand,” she added, referring to her departure to Paris for the 2024 Olympics. Cherrelle and the six-time WNBA All-Star’s new baby boy will surely be cheering Griner on from afar. “Expect all of the photos all of the pictures,” joked Brasby. “Oh yeah my whole phone is turned into him now,” Griner replied.
Griner and Cherelle first revealed they were expecting on April 14. “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” the couple captioned a photo of them hand in hand, looking down at sonogram photos over Cherelle’s bump.
Friends and fans shared their excitement and well wishes for the soon-to-be family of three in the comments. “Congrats ! Amazing ! Mini Griner homie,” wrote Belgian pro basketball player Marjorie Carpréaux. “Congratulations Relle and BG! You both are going to be amazing parents,” added former NBA and WNBA dancer Mark Anthony. ESPN commentator Arielle Chambers and artist Kehlani, sent their love and congratulations alongside the Phoenix Mercury organization.
Brittany and Cherelle first met in 2013 while attending Baylor University and got engaged in 2018. The two tied the night in June 2019 and have been together ever since. Brittney first became a household name in Feburary 2022 when she was detained in Russia after customs agents at a Moscow airport said they found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.
While Brittany said she had left the cartridges in her bag inadvertently, she was ultimately sentenced to nine years in prison. After several months, she was released and sent back to the US thanks to a deal between the US and Russia. “Today my family is whole,” Cherelle said at a press conference held the day of her wife’s release in December 2022. ““Thank you everybody for your support. Today is just a happy day for me and my family, so I’m going to smile right now.”
Our congratulations to Cherelle and Brittney on their new addition!
