You’ve seen it all over your socials—the slime-green square with “brat” slapped across it in bold, black, lowercase font. It’s the cover art for Brat, Charli XCX’s sixth studio album—and the internet can’t seem to escape its takeover.

Since the release of Brat, “brat” has become the internet phrase. It’s been used to describe almost everything, from fashion to beauty to celebrities to seasons, like the “Brat summer” everyone’s been talking about since the album’s launch in June. Even politicians can be “brat,” it seems; in a viral tweet, Charli XCX dubbed Vice President Kamala Harris “brat” after she announced her bid for president.

But what makes something or someone “brat,” exactly, and what could the viral Brat takeover mean for your future baby? More importantly, what are some of the ways baby can embrace their best “brat” self? (We promise it’s actually a good thing!) Here, we explain what it means to be “brat” and give you a list of the 10 best, most Brat-inspired baby names to choose from.

What Is “Brat”?

For many parents, the word “brat” can send chills up the spine. But this year, it’s taken on a whole new meaning. In a nutshell, the “brat” ethos or “Brat summer” trend means accepting who you are wholeheartedly—ego, insecurities, flaws and all. It champions having the time of your life while embracing the messiness, mayhem and magic that make you, well, you. It celebrates breaking the mold and looking like a noughties icon while you’re at it. As Charli XCX explains, “You’re just that girl who is a little messy and maybe says dumb things sometimes, who feels herself but then maybe has a breakdown, but parties through it. It’s very honest, it’s very blunt, a little bit volatile. That’s brat.”

Such lessons of self-acceptance and authenticity could be huge for little ones as they grow and learn to love who they are.

The Top 10 Brat Baby Names

The best part about the “brat” trend is that there are plenty of ways baby can rock the attitude, mindset and aesthetic—and not just in the summer. Here are 10 Brat names that nod to everything “Brat summer” embodies, and all the things baby can strive to be: sassy, confident, bold and unstoppable.
