Benadryl Bottles Recalled Due to 'Child Poisoning' Risk
After a recent discovery regarding improper packaging, a batch of Benadryl Liquid Elixir sold online has been recalled due to risks of accidental child poisoning. Here’s what parents need to know.
Why is Benadryl Liquid Elixir being recalled?
On March 20, 2025, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of Benadryl Liquid Elixir, 100 mL bottles, due to packaging that does not meet federal child-resistant standards. The product contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine that is required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act to be sold in child-resistant packaging. “The packaging of the products is not child-resistant, posing a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children,” the CPSC wrote in its recall notice.
Though no injuries have been reported, the risk of poisoning from ingesting diphenhydramine is significant. According to Mount Sinai, a diphenhydramine overdose can cause symptoms ranging from hallucinations to seizures and serious heart rhythm disturbances that can lead to death.
How do I know if my product is affected by the recall?
The recall applies to 100 mL bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir with the code X003VRIGUL printed on a white label at the bottom of the outer packaging. The bottles are round and dark with pink and white labels displaying the word “Benadryl” in blue text. The product was sold online at Amazon.com between July 2023 and October 2024 for approximately $16–$19.
It’s important to note: this specific batch of Benadryl was not authorized for sale in the United States. “Benadryl Liquid Elixir 100 ml bottle is a product manufactured in Canada for Canadian consumers and meets Health Canada’s packaging regulations. It appears this product may have been diverted from Canada and inappropriately sold in the United States by an unauthorized third-party online seller,” A Kenvue spokesperson—the parent company of Benadryl—told People.
The company emphasizes that this recall does not impact any other Benadryl product sold in the U.S. or Canada.
What should I do if my product is recalled?
Parents are advised to immediately store the recalled product out of sight and reach of children and then dispose of it. Though only the bottle is being recalled, both the bottle and medication should be discarded.
