Barney Is Back: the Iconic ‘90s Kids’ Show Gets a Makeover
An icon of the late ‘90s, Barney is back to share his lessons of love and kindness with a whole new generation.
Mattel Inc. announced this week that the polarizing purple dinosaur would be making his triumphant return to TV next year. The launch, branded as a “comprehensive revitalization of the Barney brand,” will center on a new animated Barney with bigger eyes, a revamped snout and a friendly disposition.
Created for preschool kids, the series will still feature Barney’s interactions with various friends, introducing new audiences to the world of Barney through music-filled adventures centered on love, community and encouragement.
“Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time,” said Josh Silverman, Mattel’s Chief Franchise Officer and Global Head of Consumer Products, in the announcement. “We will tap into the nostalgia of the generations who grew up with Barney, now parents themselves, and introduce the iconic purple dinosaur to a new generation of kids and families around the world across content, products and experiences.”
While many millennial parents remain divided on the reboot, Barney has once again stirred up plenty of conversation across the internet. From parents joking about Barney’s Buccal Fat removal to others applauding the new design.
