Australian Model Didn’t Know She Was Pregnant Until She Gave Birth
Oh baby! One Australian model recently had a life-changing surprise when she unexpectedly gave birth to a baby in her bathroom.
Erin Langmaid, 23, welcomed her baby girl, Isla May, who weighed at 7 pounds and 7 ounces, on October 29 with boyfriend, Daniel Carty. The only issue? She didn’t know she was pregnant! Throughout her entire pregnancy, the model had no bump, cravings, morning sickness or any other symptoms.
“I wasn’t showing obviously because I fit into everything,” Langmaid told Australian outlet 7News. “It’s just really bizarre.”
The model didn’t realize she was pregnant until she started feeling sick and went into the bathroom—less than 10 minutes later she was holding Isla. When her boyfriend ran to the bathroom after hearing her scream, he was shocked at what he found, thinking, “Hang on, there’s two." But Carty quickly realized Isla wasn’t breathing and called triple-0 (Australia’s version of 911).
Luckily, both Langmaid and baby are doing fine. She most likely experienced what medical professionals call a cryptic pregnancy. The commonly used stats around the phenomenon probably come from a 2002 German study, which found that one in 475 women didn’t know she was pregnant at 20 weeks along, and one in 2,445 women didn’t know she was pregnant until she went into labor.
Despite the initial surprise, the couple is looking forward to the next chapter. “I’m still in shock, but you just adjust and this is our life now. We wouldn’t change it,” Erin told 7News.
In an Instagram post Carty shared of the three, he wrote, “After an extremely tough few days both mother and daughter are perfectly well and ready to go home. The support of our family and friends is something that we will never be able to thank them enough for. To Erin the courage you have shown is something I didn’t think possible, you are an incredible person and will be an amazing mum. Now after a big week we look forward to life as a little fam with the most gorgeous new little addition and all the great things that come with that!”
