Meet Kavi: American Girl’s First South Asian ‘Girl of the Year’

Few toy brands are more beloved than American Girl. The iconic dolls were a staple of the 90s and early 2000s, from Samantha to Kirsten, and behind each doll was a book with her unique and exciting historical backstory. As we reach into the new year, though, the iconic brand isn’t just focused on the past but the future as well.

On Thursday, American Girl introduced its 2023 ‘Girl of The Year’ Kavi Sharma. Unlike the classic dolls you may remember, “Girl of the Year” dolls are based on modern characters with inspiring stories that are designed to reflect the stories of American girls today.

Kavi represents the brand’s first South Asian ‘Girl of The Year’ with a vivid backstory featuring her Indian-American family, unique cultural experiences, her dog Scamper and her dream of performing on Broadway.

“Kavi’s story is important to all the young readers who will see parts of their lives represented. I took immense delight in showcasing slivers of Indian culture, including dance, yoga traditions, food, clothing, and magical festivals like Diwali and Holi,” the author of Kavi’s story, Varsha Bajaj, said in a press release.

In addition to her multi-layered backstory, Kavi’s character comes to life as an 18-inch doll, with brown eyes, medium skin tone and layered dark-brown hair styled in a half ponytail.

Kavi’s product collection is filled with fun, showstopping outfits and accessories that reflect her passion for performing, including her signature outfit complete with a multicolored cropped mesh top, silver joggers, and pink tennis shoes, plus an accessory set that includes a faux-fur bucket hat, quilted purse, charm, and journal.

“As we ring in a new year, we’re excited to have Kavi Sharma take center stage in our popular Girl of the Year lineup,” said American Girl’s general manager Jamie Cygielman. “Just like all our beloved characters, Kavi’s culturally relevant and aspirational stories help inspire kids to shine bright in their own way and be proud of who they are.”
