Mom Shares Hilarious a to Z of ‘What I Wish I Knew Before Pregnancy’
You can do all your research, and there’s still so much about pregnancy that is unique, unknowable, and frankly so odd and unexpected that all you can do is laugh. This surprise hilarity may be partially why Bria Jones’ viral A to Z “Things I Wish I Knew Before I Got Pregnant” video series, is resonating so deeply with parents.
Each video in the series delivers unfiltered truth, sprinkled with humor and practical advice. From the not-so-glamorous bodily changes to the unsolicited commentary from strangers, Jones keeps things real while breaking down myths and offering reassurance along the way. While every letter offers something worth watching, here are a few of our favorite (and lesser-known) moments that had us nodding and laughing:
A is for Areola
In the inaugural video of the series—which has racked up over 2.9 million views—Jones dives right into the truth many moms don’t see coming: before baby even arrives, your nipples will change. “You’re going to wake up one day and they are going to quadruple in size. They get darker, stronger, harder… I have upgraded to powerful pepperonis,” she says. “They get itchy, they get dry, they get really sensitive sometimes.”
And while it may sound extreme, she explains there’s a biological reason behind it all. “So the reasoning is because babies come out damn near blind. They need to be able to find the food source. My son is going to be able to find the food source—he might even be able to hear it from space,” she joked.
C is for Congestion
Next up, Jones tackles another sneaky symptom: pregnancy congestion. “Congratulations, mamma, you’re pregnant! You’re officially a walking booger,” she begins. “From this moment forward, any hole that can be plugged with mucus will be plugged with mucus.” While she dives into shortness of breath in another video, this clip is all about how relentless congestion makes things worse: “During pregnancy you’re already going to have trouble breathing, but it would just be too boring if there wasn’t something making it even harder to breathe—like two trillion gallons of mucus.”
Before pregnancy, Jones says she had no breathing issues, but now… “My husband now says that when he sees me sleeping, it looks like I’m fighting for my life.” And when it comes time to blow your nose? “Prepare for a bloody massacre,” she jokes. “Don’t take for granted the ability to breathe through both of your nostrils—’cause it ain’t happening during pregnancy.”
J stands for ‘Just Wait’
Jones’ next letter is all about the unsolicited comments. “As soon as people see that cute little bump of yours, you’re a target,” she says. “Somebody somewhere is going to make it their mission to ‘Just Wait’ you.” Jones illustrates the all-too-common interaction: “‘Have you been sleeping okay?’ comments an outsider. ‘No, I’ve actually been getting terrible sleep,’ the mom replies. ‘Oh, you think you’re tired now? Just wait,’” adds the other person.
Her frustration is clear—and relatable. “You think we don’t know we are going to get our sh_t rocked? Half of us already are getting our sh_t rocked from being pregnant,” she says. “There’s a difference between honesty and pure negativity. And when you ‘Just Wait’ a pregnant woman, it’s like you are in a competition to make sure you bring the negativity to her.”
W stands for Wetness
Jones doesn’t shy away from the TMI topics—and thank goodness. Her take on the increase in discharge during pregnancy is as candid as it gets. “I knew there would be a lot more bodily fluids but honey, can I be honest with you for a second? The girls are leaving snail trails,” she laughs. “I never got a pregnancy glow, but I got a pregnancy flow.”
She admits she was completely unprepared. “I would have loved to know I was going to become a human faucet, but I had no heads-up or warning on this one. So I was like, ‘Is this allowed?’ I thought my water broke, then I realized this [was] just an everyday thing.” And as for the why behind this change? “Now what exactly is the evolutionary reason for this? I have no idea what the answer is here, but prepare yourself for the tsunami.”
While not every mystery of pregnancy can be solved, we love how Jones makes pregnant moms feel seen while also offering a laugh during difficult times. For more real talk and expert guidance, follow along with The Bump’s Pregnancy Week-by-Week. And remember—hang in there, there’s more fun to come.
