A subtler form of Zelda, it derives from Old German Griselda and means "grey battle," "dark battle," or "grey battle maid." This feminine name is shared with a princess of The Legend of Zelda game franchise. Alongside her courageous friend Link, she embarks on perilous adventures to escape her evil captor, Ganon. Beyond the magical land of Hyrule, Zelda brings to mind American flapper and novelist Ella Fitzgerald and one of two beloved aunts in the Archie comic book Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
