Varya is a girl’s name most commonly found in Russia and Eastern Europe. As the short form of Varvava or Barbara, it can be translated as “foreign” from Greek. As per Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox tradition, Saint Barbara is an important figure. Imprisoned in a tower and then later martyred when she refused to renounce Christianity, early Christians took inspiration from her and referred to themselves as “barbarians” in comparison to the pagan Romans and Greeks.
