Scotia

If you've ever wondered how Ireland and Scotland share such a kindred connection, the name Scotia offers a glimpse into that history. Initially used by the Romans to refer to Ireland around 500 AD, Scotia derives from the Celtic Scoti or Scotti, borrowed from the Latin name for the Gaels. It also appears in Old English as Scottas being "inhabitants of Ireland" or "Irishmen." These Gaels first settled in Ireland and then migrated to Scotland. Over time, Scotland as a country first came into fruition under Kenneth I MacAlpin, King of the Scots and Picts in 843 AD, eventually becoming modern-day Scotland in the 14th century. Over time, Scotia's meaning has shifted, but, it remains a name deeply tied to Gaelic history and migration.
