Makana

Makana is a beautiful name of Hawaiian origin meaning “gift from heaven.” All babies are a gift, but this is an especially meaningful name for a baby you may have been waiting a long time for. Makana is also the name of a mountain on the island of Kauaʻi, one of only two locations where the fire-throwing ceremony, ōahi, was held. In ancient times, this ceremony was held to celebrate special occasions such as a visit from an aliʻi, or high chief. Skilled fire-throwers would climb to the top of the mountain and hurl flaming logs out into the ocean, filling the night sky with sparks.
