Imogenia
i-moge-nia,
im(o)-genia
Origin:Irish
Other Origin(s):Latin
Meaning:Maiden; Innocent
Imogenia is a lovely name for girls. While it means “maiden” from the Gaelic inghean, it can also mean “innocent” from the Latin innocens. Funnily enough, the name Imogen, of which Imogenia is a variant, was introduced through an erroneous copy of Shakespeare’s 1609 play Cymbeline. The story goes that when the manuscripts were first committed to print, the letter ‘m’ was mistakenly printed instead of ‘nn’! Nevertheless, Imogen or Innogen is often regarded as the most tender and pure of all Shakespearean heroines. So choosing this name is one way to ensure the qualities that make this character so loved rub off on your little one as well!
