Donna as a girl's name is of Italian origin meaning "lady." The original meaning is closer to "lady of the home." It is a title of respect equivalent to Don for men and also finds its roots in the Scottish Donald, meaning "ruler of the world." The name Donna was at the height of its popularity during the 1950s and 1960s when it climbed to as high as 14 in the United States baby charts. This could coincide with the influx of Italian migrants who moved from Italy to the United States in search of a better life. Since then, it appears those with Italian roots have opted for different names which have led Donna to slip well out of the top 1,000 charts. Perhaps it’s time to bring this Italian classic back?
