Destry

When you tell baby Destry about their name’s Western movie connections, you might just awaken their inner “yee-haw!” A gender-neutral title, Destry is perhaps most easily recognizable from the novel and film Destry Rides Again. This work follows a sheriff called Destry, who brings law, order, and an investigative eye to an unruly Western town. Despite its Wild West connotations, Destry’s origins are French, from the last name Destrier. Both Destry and Destrier derive from the Anglo-Norman French word destrer, which means “war horse.” If baby Destry is anything like the cowpokes, sheriffs, and drifters who filled the screens of Western movies, they’ll have a “howdy” for everyone they meet and the courage to gallop toward their next big dream.
