Dearbhla
de(a)-rbh-la,
dear-bhla
Origin:Irish
Meaning:Poet's daughter; Daughter of Ireland; True desire
Dearbhla is a combination of two Irish girls' names, Deirbhile and Dearbháil. Deirbhile means “daughter of the poet,” deriving from the Irish word file. A file was a member of the elite class of poets, the filí, that existed in Ireland and Scotland until the Renaissance. As for Dearbháil, it’s believed to mean “daughter of Fál,” with Fál being an ancient name for Ireland. This poetic name was derived from the Lia Fáil, or “Stone of Destiny,” located on the Hill of Tara. Alternatively, Dearbháil may mean “true desire.” Dearbhla remains a popular name in Ireland, and is sometimes anglicized as Dervla. If your little one is the child of a poet, or you want to highlight their Irish connections, beautiful Dearbhla could be a fitting name.
