Barbarella is a variant of the name Barbara, which derives from the Ancient Greek word barbaros (foreign.) The variant Barbarella originated as a surname in Sicily, with other variants being Barbaro, Barbarelli, Barabari, and more. Today, the name is most commonly associated with the 1968 movie of the same name starring Jane Fonda.
