Azat

Azat is an Armenian name for boys. Possibly related to the Iranian word for “free” or “noble,” it’s a term used to describe a class of nobility. Historically, they have been known to be landowners who pledge allegiance to the king. They were also warriors, serving in the feudal cavalry. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for Azatk (plural form) to be likened to medieval Western knights. Azat is also the name of a village in Armenia, most famous for being the birthplace of the ballad Ashig Alasgar, a highly regarded poet of Azerbaijani folk songs.
