Historically, “pumpkin spice” was more commonly known as “pumpkin pie spice,” and it’s said to have originated sometime before the late 18th century. It made its first appearance in two pumpkin pie recipes in Amelia Simmons’ 1796 cookbook American Cookery. The basic recipe for pumpkin spice includes cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves and allspice, and it’s all thanks to those cozy flavors that this decadent blend has become the fall obsession.
