The exceedingly unique name Arnkatla derives from an Old Norse name spelled Arnkætill and Ærnkæll. It is known in Nordic as a kenning, or compound word. The two halves of the traditional forms of Arnkatla come from ǫrn and ketill, meaning "eagle" and "kettle" or "cauldron" respectively.
