“Having twins share a crib might seem like a good idea to save space and promote bonding, but unfortunately it isn’t the safest option,” says Rachel Mitchell, a certified pediatric and maternity sleep consultant and founder of My Sweet Sleeper. As it stands, there isn’t sufficient research surrounding the safety of having twins or multiple children sleep in the same bed. And since sleep safety is paramount, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends placing each infant in a separate crib (or appropriate sleep space) for naps and overnight sleep. Mitchell also points out that cribs and mattresses undergo specific safety testing to ensure they’re suitable for infants; but this testing is based on one child sleeping in the crib, not two. “Adding another infant into the crib or bassinet could compromise the manufacturer’s safety guarantee and guidelines,” explains Mitchell.
For twins, Mitchell recommends placing two individual bassinets side by side (or using a double bassinet that has met current safety standards). “It’s natural for twins to want to be close to one another, and this is encouraged, especially in the newborn stage,” says Mitchell. But, it’s best to do so in a safe way.

Double bassinets. Bassinets are a convenient option for parents that want to keep babies nearby for middle-of-the-night feeds and diaper changes. Specifically designed for twins, double bassinets offer two sleep zones separated with a dividing wall, which is often made from mesh for airflow and visibility. It’s a good choice for siblings who like to sleep next to each other, as they can still see their twin. Although bassinets can be used from birth, infants may outgrow them quickly. To determine how long you can use a specific model, read the manufacturer’s age and weight guidelines.

A playard is an enclosed space with a sturdy floor that’s safe for sleep or play. They tend to be portable, with durable frames that can be assembled and disassembled. The options included on this list all feature double bassinet inserts that twin babies can sleep in for the first few months. Once they outgrow the removable bassinets, you can still use it for playtime, but you’ll need to invest in separate cribs for each child.

The best cribs for twins provide each child with a designated sleep space. While it may be tempting to let them curl up together, sleep safety is key, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.
