In a nutshell:

Based on my experience testing each of these toddler sleep sacks with my one-year-old, I chose the ErgoBaby On the Move Sleep Bag as the overall best. I appreciated how easy it was to wash, the generous, adjustable fit that offers room to grow and the high-quality feel.

Getting your toddler to go to sleep can be a challenge, to say the least. But, when bedtime rolls around, one thing’s for sure: You’ll want your little one to be comfy, cozy and sleep-safe (whether they’re in your bed or their own). Enter: Toddler sleep sacks. These wearable blankets are just as cozy as their infant counterparts but have been specifically designed with tots in mind.

I’m a mom of four kids, ranging in age from one to 10. Over the years, I’ve been through a slew of sleep sacks for toddlers and have been impressed at how much this sleepwear category has grown recently. My one-year-old tested 10 popular sleep sacks at naptime and bedtime to see how these stood up to regular use. Overall, we found that there are a lot of quality options out there, including several that are durable enough to be passed down to other kids.

Here, browse top-rated toddler sleep sacks for an array of categories, from quilted and winter styles to lightweight and transitional designs. Plus, read expert-backed advice to ensure your little one is safe as they snooze.

How We Tested and Chose the Toddler Sleep Sacks

Image: Courtesy Korin M.

A good baby sleep sack can help support a seamless bedtime experience. Here’s how we chose our picks: We tested the top toddler sleep sacks on a 1-year-old, using each for two full night times and naps. Each sleep sack was washed and dried three times according to the manufacturer’s instructions. We consulted with a certified pediatric sleep consultant, as well as safe sleep guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on what to look for in toddler sleep sacks, as well as important elements to consider. To understand how these sandboxes have worked for families, we conducted exhaustive market research, analyzing feedback on forums and reading user reviews to see how well these sleep sacks worked for parents and their toddlers across the country. Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read about how The Bump develops and reviews all articles, including product reviews.

Ergobaby Sleeping Bag On The Move
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Large size range
  • Versatile, year-round weight
  • Seat belt slot
  • Affordable price point
Things To Consider
  • May be large on smaller children

At the top of our roundup is ErgoBaby’s On the Move Sleep Bag, which checks all of the boxes on our list. This sleep sack with legs offers a generous fit and age range (the small runs from 6 to 18 months, for example), giving kids plenty of room to grow. There are snaps at the shoulders that can be adjusted, along with a full zip down the front to make diaper and pull-up changes a breeze. Plus, there’s even a seat belt slot, making this a perfect option for late-night road trips.

The toddler sleep sack comes in numerous patterns and was a big hit with my one-year-old, who regularly wore it to play in before settling down for naps and bedtime. Parents will appreciate that it’s simple to wash; you can just toss it in with the rest of your laundry. It didn't shrink or pill, and there were no snags, despite being washed with Velcro-heavy ice hockey equipment.

Moreover, the fabric of this sleep sack is soft and comfortable, with an all-purpose mid-weight TOG rating. The edges have piping around them for reinforcement, and the zipper is strong. Overall, these details work together to create a high-quality, durable design that you can count on for many snoozes to come. Just be aware that the large size range means it may be big on your child for a while. But with plenty of room to grow, you can get a lot of use out of this sleep sack before needing to size up.

Sizes: 6-18 months to 18-36 months | Material: 100% cotton | Care instructions: Machine wash

Our product tester says:
It feels high quality and durable, and you can get a lot of mileage out of one size.

Best sleep sack for year-round use

GUNAMUNA Wearable Premium Duvet Sack Walker, Luxury Sleeping Bag
Image: Amazon
Buying Options
Amazon|$68
What We Love
  • Soft, squishy feel
  • Good for year-round use
  • Large cuffs for easy movement
Things To Consider
  • Needs two cycles in the dryer
  • Air drying can take a whole day

Toddler sleep sacks aren’t just for colder months. Case in point: The gunamuna Sleep Bag Walker. This toddler wearable blanket feels high-quality and has a soft, worn-in texture that’s incredibly comfortable to the touch, making it a great option for year-round use. It’s warm, but not so toasty that kids will overheat at night—and my one-year-old had no issues with night sweats while wearing this.

This option is slightly puffy so kids can feel cozy without looking like a marshmallow. It fits well up top and is baggier at the bottom to create a comforter-like silhouette that still allows for mobility. My one-year-old appreciated that it has feet, with large cuffs to create plenty of space for her to run around before bed. And, as a parent, I appreciated that it was easy to put on and take off, thanks to a zipper that runs up the length of it.

The seams are well-constructed and the zipper has a guard at the neck to prevent accidental pinches. There’s also a "potty-ready" zipper at the bottom for late-night bathroom breaks. Just note: You’ll need to hold the fabric up while your child goes to the bathroom or take their legs out of the bottom part to avoid getting it wet. While this sleep sack can be tossed in the wash, it takes up to a day to fully dry via air drying, which the company recommends. The bottom line? This toddler sleep sack with feet is a nice middle-of-the-road option. It's not too hot or too light, and it's very comfortable.

Sizes: 3-9 months to 24-36 months | Material: 95% bamboo viscose/5% spandex | Care instructions: Machine wash cold, tumble or line dry

Our product tester says:
The gunamuna Sleep Bag Walker feels like a soft cloud that's wrapped around your child.

Easiest toddler sleep sack to use

Eclipse Sleep Bag
Image: Copper Pearl
Buying Options
Amazon|$44.95
What We Love
  • Easy to get kids in and out
  • Slightly plush feel
  • High-quality construction
Things To Consider
  • Machine wash cold
  • No leg holes

Dealing with last-minute diaper and pull-up changes can be a drag when your toddler is already in their sleep sack for the night, but the Copper Pearl Sleep Bag makes these moments easy. The traditional-style sleep sack has a zipper that runs all the way down the front, side and bottom of the sack, so it’s simple to get your child in and out. While testing, I appreciated how easy it was for late-night diapering and potty breaks. The sleep sack is large—there was extra fabric at the bottom when my one-year-old stood up with it—but there’s plenty of room to grow.

If that’s not all, this toddler wearable blanket comes in 149 color and pattern options, so you’ll be able to find a match for even the pickiest of tots. The construction is high-quality, with nearly invisible zippers, strong seams and thick piping. The knit fabric is soft, with a slight plushness for extra warmth. While it’s a good fit for cooler nights, it wasn’t so heavy that my child got sweaty during use.

This sleep sack is designed to be washed in cold water and tumble dried on low, which is slightly different from how many people do their laundry. Still, the fabric held up well over repeated washings during testing and even seemed to get softer over time. As a whole, the sleep sack has the feel of a well-loved blanket, with a weight that many toddlers will appreciate.
Sizes: 0-6 months to 18-24 months | Material: Polyester/rayon | Care instructions: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Our product tester says:
This is a great sleep sack for parents who want to keep their child contained, but also want the freedom to let them roam a little given that the zipper can be fully undone on the bottom.

Softest toddler sleep sack

Tealbee Dreamsuit Toddler Sleep Sack with Feet

Amazon|$41Tealbee|$40
What We Love
  • Feels like a well-loved T-shirt
  • Stylish look
  • Good for three-season use
Things To Consider
  • May need two cycles in the dryer
  • Too heavy for summer

While most sleep sacks for toddlers are soft, the Tealbee Dreamsuit takes the cake in this category. It has the cozy feel of a well-loved, old T-shirt—plus, it’s stylish, with a sleek look and even a little pocket for added flair. The pattern is crisp and well-defined, with high-quality printing. What’s more, it fit my one-year-old well and left plenty of room in the legs and gusset for her to grow into, without feeling like she would trip over it.

The Tealbee Dreamsuit features a zipper that runs the full length of the body and is easy to glide up and down. The weight is warm enough for cold weather without being too hot, and the stitching and seams are sturdy. Keep in mind that it’s a little too cozy for summer—you’ll want to find a lighter option for warmer months. This sleep sack is designed to be washed on gentle and tumble dried low, but like other heavier-weight sleep sacks we tested, it needed more time in the dryer after the first round. As a whole, the Dreamsuit offers plenty of warmth—and softness—for kids in an aesthetically pleasing package.

Sizes: 12 months-2T to 3T-4T | Material: 70% bamboo rayon/30% cotton | Care instructions: Machine wash

Our product tester says:

The weight and style make it something most parents would feel happy having their child wear, whether company is over or they're just cozying up before bedtime.

Best toddler sleep sack for cold homes

baby deedee Sleep Nest Wearable Blanket
Image: Target
What We Love
  • Delivers plenty of warmth
  • Shoulder snaps are easy to use
  • Matches a range of PJs
Things To Consider
  • Drying takes time
  • Too hot for summer
  • No feet

If the temperature in your home runs on the chilly side or your little one just likes to be extra cozy, opt for a heftier sleep sack, just like this option from Baby DeeDee. The Sleep Nest Original has polyester filling to mimic the feel of a small comforter, keeping kids nice and warm in the process. Plus, it features an additional quilted layer, earning it a TOG rating of 2.5—the highest on our list.

Even though this toddler wearable blanket is thicker, it’s still simple to use. A zipper runs down the entire length, making it easy to slip your child inside, even if they're already sleeping—something we discovered when my one-year-old conked out early one night. Snaps at the shoulders also made this process quick, without disturbing my toddler’s rest.

Baby DeeDee uses simple colors for a versatile look, and you can choose from nine colorways. This toddler sleep sack is designed to be washed cold, inside out, and tumble-dried low. Like other filled styles, this was still damp at the bottom during testing after one drying cycle. However, it was good to go after another round, and the fabric only became softer with repeated washings. This is a warm toddler sleep sack that’s sure to become a go-to in your household on cooler evenings.

Sizes: S (0-6 months) to L (18-36 months) | Material: 100% cotton (shell)/100% polyester (filling) | Care instructions: Machine wash cold and inside out, tumble dry low

Our product tester says:
Because of its weight, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has a hot sleeper or warmer house. But if your place tends to run a little cool, it's a great option.

Best durable toddler sleep sack

Wandering Elephants Organic Beekeeper™ Wearable Baby Blanket - Indigo
Image: Burt's Bees Baby
What We Love
  • 100% organic cotton
  • Durable construction and details
  • Washes well
Things To Consider
  • Drying takes time
  • May be too hot for summer use

If you’re planning to have more children or have a tot who’s rough on their gear, you may need a toddler sleep sack that’s extra durable. That’s where the Burt's Bees Baby Wearable Baby Blanket will come in handy. It’s made from 100 percent organic cotton with a sturdy construction to hold up to plenty of use, now and in the future. The design has strong, secure stitches with well-done edges for a high-quality feel. Coordinating piping around the edges also creates a stylish look.

This toddler sleep sack is simple to use—just zip it up and you’ll be good to go. The zipper runs the full length, so it’s straightforward to take on and off. The wearable blanket fits well but does offer extra room at the bottom which allowed my one-year-old to move around her crib. It can be washed with your other clothes, but the company recommends turning it inside out first. Like most sleep sacks for toddlers, it needs to be tumble-dried on low—and it may need two cycles to get fully dry. The fabric held up great over repeated washings during our testing and looked brand new every time.

Burt’s Bees sleep sack comes in 0.5 and 1.5 TOG rating options. While the latter could be used year-round, it will likely feel too toasty in the summer if you don’t have air conditioning. The final verdict: This durable option is sturdy and seems like it could easily be passed down to other kids in the future.

Best toddler sleep sack for naps

DockATot Sleep Romper, Willow Boughs
Image: Maisonette
What We Love
  • Great for play and sleep
  • Plush interior fabric
  • Gets softer with washing
  • Stylish look
Things To Consider
  • One size
  • May not be warm enough for winter
  • High price point

Toddler sleep sacks aren’t known for being fashionable choices, but the DockATot Sleep Romper challenges that opinion. This wearable blanket has a fitted design that makes this look like a “regular” romper. It’s an excellent choice for naptime, giving your toddler the flexibility to have an outfit they can move freely in before and after conking out. A side zipper and snaps at the shoulders made it easy to slide my one-year-old in and out as needed.

Because this toddler sleep sack with feet looks more like daytime clothing, the cotton poplin exterior fabric is a little stiffer than those of other sleep sacks. But the interior has a plush, slightly fuzzy feel that you would want against your child's skin. My one-year-old had no complaints about wearing this for play and sleep. The fabric and stitching are high-quality, and they definitely seem like they’d hold up over time.

DockATot recommends that this sleep sack be washed on cold and tumble-dried low, and it handled both with no issue during testing. The fabric also got softer the more it was washed. While this isn’t the cheapest sleep sack you can find, you’ll be able to get more mileage out of it—and avoid the fight to get your child dressed on cranky days—by using it as daywear, too.

Sizes: 18-36 months | Material: 100% cotton | Care instructions: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

This sleep sack is a great playsuit and a nice option for when you want your child to look stylish before and after naps.

What to Look for in a Toddler Sleep Sack

On the hunt for a snuggly toddler sleep sack? As you browse, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Size. Of course, you’ll want to make sure you choose a toddler sleep sack that’s the correct size for your kiddo. To do so, Jillian Thistel—a certified pediatric sleep consultant and founder of Twinkling Stars Pediatric Sleep Consulting in Ontario, Canada—advises parents to check the style’s age, weight and height details before purchasing. It shouldn’t “be too tight and restrictive (which could be uncomfortable and limiting to toddlers), and we also don’t want it to be too loose,” explains Thistel.
  • TOG rating. Unique to sleep-related products, a TOG rating indicates what temperatures the sleep sack is best suited for. As per Thistel, “in the summer months, or in warmer climates, it typically makes sense to use a lighter sleep sack with a lower TOG.” She continues, “in colder climates, or winter months, parents may want to use a warmer sleep sack with a higher TOG.” All in all, you’ll want to ensure that your child is at just the right temperature as they snooze—not too hot or too cold.
  • Material. Thistel recommends choosing toddler sleep sacks that are made from lightweight, comfortable and breathable materials. This is especially important “if a toddler has any type of irritation when it comes to certain fabrics,” she notes.

Toddler Sleep Sack Safety Tips

Many of the safety tips associated with baby sleep sacks are the same for toddler wearable blankets. According to the AAP, “weighted swaddles, weighted clothing or weighted objects on or near the baby are not safe and not recommended.” This includes weighted sleep sacks, which can potentially be harmful to little ones. Moreover, the AAP advises parents not to use loose blankets or bedding in baby’s sleep environment until they’re at least 12 months old.

Thistel also reminds caregivers that “just because toddlers are technically able to sleep with a blanket at 12 months old, it doesn’t mean that they’re ready to do so.” As always, take your child’s unique developmental level into account before introducing a new element into their sleep space. “Toddlers typically do better with understanding the concept of keeping a blanket on when they are around the age of 3 years old (sometimes a bit earlier or even a bit later),” Thistel adds.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should toddlers stop using a sleep sack?

There isn’t a specific age at which toddlers should stop using sleep sacks. That being said, “it typically makes sense to transition them away from the sleep sack around the time that they transition to a bed (which is usually around the age of 3 years old),” explains Thistel. For some little ones, this change may take place earlier if the sleep sack is no longer working for them—while others may take longer to part ways with their wearable blankets. Thistel reassures parents that the process will be unique for each kiddo. “We have 3 children (including twin toddlers), our oldest son slept with his sleep sack until the age of 2, one of our twins was ready to transition out of her sleep sack when she was 2.5 years old, and our other twin preferred to stay in her sleep sack until she was 3 years old,” she shares.

How do I transition my child out of a sleep sack?

Is your tot ready to graduate from a toddler sleep sack and into “big-kid” bedding? “Thankfully the transition out of the sleep sack isn’t usually a challenging transition (especially when compared to the transition out of the swaddle!),” says Thistel. If your child is showing signs of readiness, Thistel suggests letting them know ahead of time that this transition will be taking place. “Having open dialogue can help them prepare, especially if they are very attached to their sleep sack,” she explains. Instead of removing the sleep sack from their bedtime routine all at once, do so gradually.

“One strategy that I really love is having the toddler choose a new, small, light blanket that you can introduce, to start getting them used to sleeping with a blanket before you take the sleep sack away completely,” recommends Thistel. When doing this, Thistel advises parents to dress their little ones in a lightweight sleep sack, placing their blanket of choice over them as they rest. This way, they can get used to the idea of sleeping with a blanket. Then, once they’re comfortable with it, you can remove the sleep sack entirely. Lastly, Thistel reminds parents that “it may take some time for your toddler to keep a blanket on all night, and that’s okay! Give them some time and practice to get used to the new change.”
