In a nutshell:

Based on extensive market research and feedback from our team of independent product testers, we chose the LAKE Pajamas Pima Maternity Short-Long Set as the best nursing pajamas overall. This set stood out because of the hidden snaps that made nursing simple for our tester, and because of the premium-quality Pima cotton material, which is highly durable, soft and isn’t stained by breastmilk.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Nursing Pajamas

Image: Brooke T., Ashleigh A., Abby W.

To help you pick out the nursing pajamas, we identified 13 of the most popular sets and nightgowns for breastfeeding on the market. We then created a shortlist of 10 options to test with new moms. From there:

  • We enlisted the help of five new moms to test two pairs of nursing pajamas each. They wore them to bed, breastfed in them and even washed and dried them to get the full experience of each set. Then, these nursing moms rated each pair of PJs across several categories, including fit, ease of nursing, fabric quality, comfort, style and design and value for money.
  • To understand how these postpartum pajamas have worked for other new parents, we conducted exhaustive market research, scouring forums and message boards and reading user reviews to find out what parents nationwide looked for in breastfeeding pajamas.
  • When choosing which after-birth pajamas to feature in our roundup, we carefully consider various factors, such as size range, price point and type of nursing access.

LAKE Pajamas is one of The Bump community’s top maternity and postpartum sleepwear brands, and their Pima Maternity Short-Long Set stands out as the overall best nursing pajamas. The shirt features a hidden snap placket for simple, discreet nursing or pumping. According to our tester Abby, mom of a 2-month-old, “nursing in these pajamas is incredibly easy. The snaps provide perfect access without any obstructions, making the process smooth and convenient.” She also noted that the snaps were positioned at the ideal height.

Laura, a mom of two from The Bump community, agrees that these PJs are well-suited to breastfeeding. “They're so soft and have snaps vs. buttons, so it's super quick and easy. They also unsnap far enough so that it's easy to nurse, but not too far that you're cold [or] too exposed,” she explains. And Abby notes that when baby’s finished feeding, “it’s just as simple to snap everything back up.”

With this nursing pajama set, you’ll receive a short-sleeve top and coordinating pants, both made from 100 percent Pima cotton. This premium material is soft to the touch while also durable, so you can count on it to hold its shape for many snoozes to come. Abby appreciated that these pajamas were breathable, keeping her at the perfect temperature as she slept. “Plus, breastmilk didn’t stain the fabric, which is a big plus for nursing moms,” she praised. The new mom did point out that the set takes longer than usual to clean since they can’t go in the dryer—that said, she explained that “they hold up incredibly well. After washing and drying, they looked and felt exactly the same.”

LAKE Pajamas describes these breastfeeding pajamas as having a relaxed, comfortable fit, and Abby definitely agrees. She told us that the sleepwear was “flowy, not restrictive and never itchy”, adding that they’re “perfect for postpartum, [since there’s] no rubbing on sensitive areas.” What’s more, the bottoms have an adjustable drawstring waistband so you can adjust the fit as needed throughout the fourth trimester. The final verdict: These PJs offer the best of both worlds across functionality and comfort.

Overall best nursing nightgown

Kindred Bravely Clea Bamboo Long Sleeve Sleep Shirt
Image: Kindred Bravely
What We Love
  • C-section friendly, according to our tester
  • Stretchy, soft bamboo blend
  • Suitable for pregnancy and postpartum
  • Convenient pockets
Things To Consider
  • Our tester says it rides up when sleeping
  • Limited color options

Nursing nightgowns are another great sleepwear option for new moms, and this option from Kindred Bravely stood out as the best. The Clea Bamboo Long Sleeve Sleep Shirt offers a classic nightshirt style with button-down nursing access. The full-length buttons open to allow new parents to easily breastfeed and pump—plus, it’s great for skin-to-skin contact in those early weeks with baby. Our tester Ashleigh couldn’t get over how simple it was to nurse in these PJs. “I thought I was going to struggle to open it to nurse while I was [holding] baby. I was pleasantly surprised when I could do it with one hand,” the mom of a 7-week-old shared.

Image: Ashleigh A.

To make breastfeeding even more straightforward, this nursing nightgown is made from a blend of bamboo, viscose and spandex. As a result, it’s super soft and stretchy, so the fabric can easily be pulled to the side when it’s time to feed or pump. Ashleigh appreciated that the long sleeves were lightweight, so she didn’t feel hot when sleeping. She also told us that breastmilk spills weren’t an issue for this material and that it came out easily in the wash. Moreover, the dark color concealed any leaks Ashleigh experienced while testing.

The flowy silhouette of this nightshirt was a big hit with Ashleigh, who told us that the style fits true to size. “A nightgown like this is perfect for your ever-changing postpartum body,” she said, “my favorite part about this nightgown is that it will be comfortable when I’m back to my pre-pregnancy body, and it'll still be comfortable for my next pregnancy.” As she recovers from a C-section, she also appreciated that it didn’t rub against her incision. Better yet, when getting dressed, she liked how she could pull it on over her head without having to unbutton it. Other highlights include the convenient pockets, the delicate contrast piping and the flattering curved hem.

Image: Ashleigh A.

To sum it up in Ashleigh’s words: “It's an essential piece of clothing that not only makes nighttime feeds easier but also provides the comfort and ease that you need during the recovery and breastfeeding period.” With that in mind, she absolutely recommends it to postpartum moms, whether you’re nursing or not.

Size range: XS to 1X | Material: 95% viscose from bamboo/5% spandex | Type of nursing access: Buttons | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“Whether you're looking for something functional or just a cozy option to wear around the house, this nightgown ticks all the boxes. It's practical, easy to care for and provides a flattering, comfortable fit without feeling overly restrictive or tight.”

Best nursing pajamas with built-in bra support

Piper & Mint Drier Nights Nursing Tank & Pant Set
Image: Piper & Mint
What We Love
  • Unpadded built-in shelf bra
  • Our tester loved the lightweight, cooling fabric
  • Straightforward clip-down nursing access
  • Adjustable straps and drawstring waist
Things To Consider
  • Pants run wide, according to our tester
  • High price point

For added support from dusk to dawn, you can’t go wrong with nursing pajamas that have a built-in bra. The Piper & Mint Drier Nights Nursing Tank & Pant Set comes with a nursing tank top and pajama pants that were created with middle-of-the-night feedings in mind. The unpadded, lightly elasticated shelf bra offers new moms gentle support, and the set impressed our tester Brooke across all categories, especially fit. “The built-in bra fit my bust perfectly, and the tank had enough room to be comfortable otherwise,” she praised.

The mom of a 4-month-old shared that the tank top was convenient for nursing. “The clasp for nursing is great—not hard to open and close. I didn’t disturb baby at all when opening and closing the nursing clasps; everything was very comfortable,” Broke told us. Better yet, the opaque material is another bonus. “The fabric is not see-through,” Brooke commented. “I can wear these without a bra or underwear no problem.”

Image: Brooke T.

Another element that stood out to Brooke while testing was the premium, cooling material of these after-birth pajamas, which she described as “so soft [and] so breathable”. They’re made from a lightweight blend of modal, viscose and spandex that’s infused with mint for moisture-wicking, odor-fighting and naturally antibacterial properties. As a result, you can count on it to keep you feeling dry, even if you typically run hot when sleeping or if you have any breastmilk spills or leakage. “I'm so picky about what I wear to bed because I sweat a lot—but, these were just so comfy and no issues with sweat,” Brooke reported.

Image: Brooke T.

To accommodate your changing body throughout the postpartum period, these PJs feature adjustable straps up top and bottoms with a drawstring waist. “The pajamas will continue to fit my body as it changes postpartum, as I’ve been losing a little weight,” Brooke told us. “I feel as if I'll be able to wear them for a while.” Speaking of longevity, she shared that they were a breeze to wash and that breastmilk and nipple cream stains came out easily. Plus, the tank top in this set can be purchased on its own, so you can easily mix and match it with other pajama pants in your wardrobe if you’d like.

Size range: XS to 3XL | Material: 66% modal/29% viscose/5% spandex | Type of nursing access: Clip-down straps | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“I feel like some people might find these a little pricey, but you get what you pay for! These are certainly worth the money due to the comfort, quality and design.”

Best nursing pajamas for pull-down access

Seraphine Camille 2-Piece Bamboo Maternity & Nursing Pyjama Set
Image: Seraphine
What We Love
  • Our tester loved how supportive the top was
  • C-section-friendly, low-rise bottoms
  • Flattering fit, style and color
Things To Consider
  • Our tester says milk leaks through the fabric
  • Limited color options

One of the most common types of nursing access is pull-down or lift-up access, and that’s with good reason. Many of our testers said this was the simplest version of nursing access and often offers the most coverage, leaving them feeling less exposed mid-feed. With all those factors in mind, the Seraphine Camille 2-Piece Bamboo Maternity & Nursing Pyjama Set stood out as the best option we tested with this type of access. Our tester Ashleigh was a big fan of this set’s simple yet effective pajama top with a crossover V-neckline that allowed her to breastfeed in seconds. “Nursing cannot be easier than it is in these pajamas,” she praised. Moreover, she found the pajamas to be super supportive. Ashleigh told us: “I currently wear a DDD right now and the top fits comfortably without being too tight or too loose.” She even mentioned that she didn’t have to wear a bra under these PJs which was a major bonus.

Image: Ashleigh A.

While the top of these breastfeeding pajamas were impressive, the bottoms were equally so. At 5'9, Ashleigh shared that the inseam length fit her perfectly and that she appreciated the thick waistband for extra support. Best of all, the mom of a 7-week-old found the design C-section-friendly. “I had a C-section, and the inseam is long enough that I could've worn above or below my incision. The waistband is stretchy enough that I could've worn them immediately after birth until now,” she told us—adding that she wished she had them in the hospital post-birth.

Image: Ashleigh A.

These black nursing pajamas are both aesthetically pleasing and practical, which Ashleigh appreciated. Even though she noted that the color shows spit-up more easily, overall these PJs are a piece of cake to keep clean and they’re stylish to boot. “Personally, I love the black color because…well let's be real, it makes my postpartum body a little more flattering,” Ashleigh shared. If that’s not all, this nursing pajama set is made from a bamboo-viscose and spandex blend for a premium feel that’s naturally temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic.

Size range: XS to XXL | Material: 95% viscose from bamboo/5% spandex | Type of nursing access: Pull-down neckline | Care instructions: Machine wash; line dry

Our product tester says:

“I don’t think these pajamas could get any more comfortable. [] The top has enough support for me that I didn't have to wear a bra to bed. Hallelujah. I wish I would've had these in the hospital after birth.”

Best plus-size nursing pajamas

 3-Piece Lounge Set
Image: Storq
Buying Options
Storq|$154
What We Love
  • Luxurious, breathable fabric, according to our tester
  • Suitable for pregnancy and postpartum
  • Wide range of sizes
Things To Consider
  • Pants and robe run short
  • High price point

Storq offers the widest range of sizes of any nursing pajama brand on our list. For that reason and more, it was no surprise that these performed well across the board with our tester Brooke, a plus-sized mom of a 4-month-old. The Storq 3-Piece Lounge Set comes with a belted wrap robe, a nursing-friendly tank top and loose, mid-rise lounge pants. Worn together or separately, these pieces offer an elevated yet relaxed silhouette ideal for those after-birth days in the hospital, the end of the postpartum period and everything in between. Brooke told us that the set fit her well, with the exception of the pants having a shorter inseam than she hoped they would have. That said, she loved the quality of the organic cotton material. “The stretch of the fabric is so nice. One of the things I love about this set is that usually, I feel like sets are thin and unforgiving when it comes to imperfections in my body, but this is such great quality material that it doesn’t do that,” she praised. “[The style] makes me feel good.”

Image: Brooke T.

This sleepwear set is bump- and nursing-friendly, and the lengthy, stretchy tank top can definitely accommodate both. Made from midweight cotton, the shirt offers a T-shirt-like feel for year-round comfort. According to Brooke, “the fabric quality of this set is unreal. It feels luxurious. It’s thick and not see-through, but it's also breathable.” Plus, it has a four-button placket that Brooke said was straightforward to use when breastfeeding. “I'd definitely say this is easy to nurse in. I love the fit of the tank top; it's not tight, it's just right,” she shared.

While these postpartum pajamas come at a high price point, Brooke says they’re worth it. “You get what you pay for, and these are a little splurge in my opinion but so worth it. You can't beat the quality and comfort of these,” she praised. Better yet, the loose, loungewear style can be worn even after the postpartum period draws to a close, so you’ll get even more bang for your buck.

Size range: XS to 4X | Material: 95% cotton/5% spandex | Type of nursing access: Buttons | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low or lay flat to dry

Our product tester says:

“I think these might be some of the most comfy clothes I now own. The stretch of the material and the fit of it all is just so nice and cozy. I honestly wish I had these to wear when I was in the hospital for my baby!”

Our community says:

Ah Storq. How I love you! Everything from Storq is a splurge, but goodness, the buttery softness is incredible, and all my pieces have held up fantastically. – goldpolkadot, The Bump forum member

Best nursing pajamas for warm sleepers

Little Sleepies Women's Pajama Set

Buying Options
Little Sleepies|$64
What We Love
  • Breathable fabric
  • No interior tags for added comfort
  • Suitable for pregnancy and postpartum
  • Matching styles available for baby
Things To Consider
  • Runs large, according to our tester

Whether you’ve always been a warm sleeper or are experiencing postpartum night sweats, you’ll want a pair of PJs that keep you cool and dry all night long. Thankfully, this top and shorts set from Little Sleepies checks that box and plenty more. The sleepwear is crafted from the brand’s signature Lunaluxe Bamboo fabric, a temperature-regulating blend of bamboo viscose and spandex that keeps you from getting overheated—no matter the season. “I love the way [they] feel in bed. The material feels very cooling and so comfortable. I'm a huge fan,” shared our tester Christina. Though she tested them in December, she told us she thinks they’d also be ideal for warm weather as well. Christina couldn’t get over how luxe the material felt, commenting: “You can tell these are made with really good fabric and will last forever!” The mom of a 4-month-old reported that there were no signs of wear after washing and drying these PJs—a process that she called “very easy”.

Image: Christina C.

This nursing pajamas set from Little Sleepies is designed with both pregnancy and the postpartum period in mind, allowing new moms to get a lot of wear out of them. That said, this versatility means that breastfeeding isn’t the primary feature of this sleepwear. As a result, Christina found nursing in them to be “easy but no different than non-nursing button-down PJs.” She wishes they had a modesty panel for added coverage and support when feeding her 4-month-old. However, “the access on these is great for side nursing in bed,” Christina praised.

Overall, Christina was a big fan of how flattering these postpartum pajamas were. Elements like the lightly heathered fabric, the contrast piping and notched collar details and the convenient pockets work together to create a timeless, practical set for any new mom. “These PJs really make me feel beautiful—and every postpartum mama needs that,” Christina told us, and we wholeheartedly agree!

Size range: XS to 3XL | Material: 95% viscose from bamboo/5% spandex | Type of nursing access: Buttons | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“I wore [these] with a sleep bra on and without one, and it was comfortable both ways—not tight or restrictive at all. These PJs are my very favorite now! They would be spectacular for summer.”

Best budget-friendly nursing pajamas

Kindred Bravely Davy Maternity & Nursing Pajama Set
Image: Kindred Bravely
What We Love
  • Affordable price
  • Two types of nursing access
  • Flowy, breathable fabric, according to our tester
  • Convenient pockets
Things To Consider
  • Sizing up is suggested

If you’re looking for reasonably priced sleepwear that’s been designed with breastfeeding moms in mind, Kindred Bravely’s Davy Maternity & Nursing Pajama Set—the least expensive pajama set on our list—is a great choice. Thanks to the double-layered top, these PJs offer two nursing access types; the stylish ruched neckline can be pulled down or lifted to reveal the hidden second layer. Our tester Abby appreciated how discreet the nursing access is, adding that it’s “a good option for nursing especially if you [want] something that doesn’t look like a nursing top.” The mom of a 2-month-old noted that it was slightly tricky to undo her nursing bra when wearing these PJs, but once everything was in place, she could sit comfortably while feeding.

Image: Abby W.

Another aspect that impressed Abby during testing was the super-soft material. The coordinating set is made from a blend of viscose and spandex, resulting in a silky, lightweight feel for optimal comfort. “The material is breathable, keeping me comfortably cool or warm as needed, and it didn’t stain when breastmilk got on it—a huge plus for nursing moms,” Abby shared. On that note, she told us that the sleepwear was straightforward to clean and dry with the rest of her laundry. After washing it, she commented that “the appearance and feel of the fabric haven’t changed at all—they still look and feel as good as new.”

While the top is the star of the show, the postpartum pajama bottoms performed equally well during testing. The wide-leg silhouette and elastic waistband create a flowy fit that’s supportive in all the right places. “The stretchy waistband is a standout feature, providing a snug yet comfortable fit around the waist without being restrictive,” Abby told us. Moreover, she added that she “appreciated the fabric's stretchiness, which allowed for easy movement without losing its shape.” The bottom line: These maternity and nursing pajamas prove that going with reasonably priced sleepwear doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on premium design details.

Size range: S to 1X | Material: 94% viscose/6% spandex | Type of nursing access: Pull-down neckline; hidden lift-up nursing access | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“The fabric, fit and stylish design make them well worth the investment, ensuring both practicality and a touch of luxury for any nursing mom. A good value for the comfort and versatility they provide!”

What We Love
  • Quick, easy nursing access, according to our tester
  • Moms say it can be worn as a dress
  • Can also be used as a labor or delivery gown
  • Lots of color options
Things To Consider
  • Some moms wish the fabric was thicker

Nursing nightgowns don’t have to cost a small fortune to be effective and stylish. Case in point: This option from Ekouaer. While you may not be familiar with the brand, they’ve become a go-to online retailer for maternity and postpartum sleepwear on Amazon, and our tester Emily had high praise for this breastfeeding nightgown across the board. In particular, she said feeding her 10-week-old was super simple when wearing it, thanks to the pull-over V-neckline. “It allows you access in like five seconds and is really convenient when you have a hungry baby and want something simple, easy and cute,” Emily praised. And even better, they ring up for well under the $50 mark.

When your little one is finished feeding, getting covered up again is no problem, whether it’s the middle of the night, the early afternoon or any time in between. Emily says,“[the nightgown] is great for nursing in the dark or with little light. The process of redressing or quickly covering up is also pretty smooth.” To accommodate your changing shape in the coming weeks and months, Emily also noted that the front of the dress can be adjusted as needed.

Image: Emily V.

Many moms say that this versatile nursing nightgown can also be worn as a labor and delivery gown or a casual dress, and Emily agrees that it’s suitable for any time of day. “The dress is so soft that I wanted to wear it [repeatedly]. It’s super comfortable whether worn during the day or to sleep at night,” she shared. In bed, Emily loved that the breathable material wasn’t itchy and kept her at the optimal temperature. Plus, she added that the flowy fit didn’t hug her body, which she appreciated as a new mom. All in all, this nursing nightgown is sure to become a new staple in your postpartum sleepwear rotation.

Our product tester says:

“I think this is absolutely worth the price. It’s very good quality. The dress definitely met my expectations and I would for sure buy it for myself.”

What to Consider When Shopping for Nursing Pajamas

When shopping for nursing pajamas, comfort and softness are, of course, top priorities. That said, there are a few other factors you may want to consider before clicking “add to cart”. Based on feedback from our product testers, here’s what to look for as you browse:

  • Built-in bra support. Many new parents sleep in nursing bras for added support and ease of access for nighttime feeding. However, some nursing pajama tops come with built-in bras. Our testers, who had a wide range of bra sizes, told us that PJs with this feature offered enough support that they didn’t need to wear another layer underneath.
  • Adjustable bottoms. Since nursing pajamas also tend to be postpartum pajamas, our testers told us they preferred PJ pants with adjustable drawstring or high-quality elastic waistbands. Due to body changes in the weeks and months after giving birth, this feature allows you to adjust the fit as needed. If you had a C-section, you’ll also want to see where the waistband sits on your body to ensure the fit is comfortable.
  • Ease of care. Another element to consider is how easy these after-birth pajamas are to care for. To make your life easier, opt for sleepwear that can be washed alongside a normal load of laundry. It’s also worth noting that some fabrics can’t go in the dryer, which can make the cleaning process longer. Most importantly, you’ll also want to make sure that the material of the pajamas doesn’t stain easily; after all, these PJs will encounter a lot of breastmilk, baby spit-up and more in the coming months.
  • Color and print options. Our testing found that color and print options are super important to new moms. Some testers told us they preferred black or dark-colored sleepwear, as these hues made them feel more confident as their bodies changed throughout the postpartum period. Likewise, a few testers mentioned that they liked patterned pajamas more than solid-color styles, as the prints are better at hiding milk stains before the next wash.

Types of nursing access

Not all pajamas that can be used for nursing are specifically called “nursing pajamas,” but it’s important to make sure whatever you choose has quick and easy access for nursing. To simplify your search, here’s a breakdown of the most common types of nursing access:

  • Pull-down/lift-up access. This is probably the type of nursing access you’re most familiar with already. In short, these pajama necklines or hidden nursing flaps can be easily pulled down or lifted for straightforward breastfeeding access. According to our testers, this was one of the most comfortable and least revealing nursing access types.
  • Clip-down straps. Some breastfeeding pajamas have clip-down straps, just like those found on nursing bras. These straps feature an extra clasp at the front that can be undone for simple nursing access. That said, our testers told us this type of nursing access often left them feeling more exposed than others, which is something to keep in mind.
  • Button access. These are pajamas with buttons down the front of the top which can be unbuttoned for nursing access. Most aren’t exclusively for breastfeeding, so they tend to be more versatile than other options. Moms who tested button-closure sleepwear for us also mentioned they were pleasantly surprised by how simple it was to undo and redo, even at night.
  • Snap closure. Similar to button closure (but slightly more convenient), this type of nursing access usually looks like a row of snap fasteners that can quickly be undone and redone. Unlike button-closure PJs, snap closure tends to only go down about a third of the way from the top rather than its full length.
  • Magnetic closure. Magnetic closure is perhaps the least common type of nursing access. It’s very similar to button- and snap-closure PJs, but instead features magnets within the shirt so you can easily open and close it as needed. We tested one pair of postpartum pajamas with this type of access, but it proved more tricky than it may seem to redo all the magnetic closures—so they didn’t make the cut.

Types of breastfeeding pajamas

Just like any other sleepwear, there are a ton of nursing pajama options out there to choose from. Before shopping, consider which of the two main types would best suit your needs:

  • Nursing pajama sets. Nursing pajama sets provide full coverage to keep you warm and cozy both day and night—because let’s face it, when you have a newborn, there will be plenty of days when you don’t get around to getting dressed. They’re also ideal for those early days in the hospital. Nursing pajama sets offer fantastic flexibility: You can opt for short sleeves and shorts or long sleeves and pants (or mix and match), depending on the weather. A few bundles even come with nursing tank tops or stylish robes as well.
  • Nursing nightgowns. If you prefer a flowier fit, a nursing nightgown is for you. Thanks to V-neck styles and front-button plackets, they’re perfect for easy breastfeeding access at night and pair especially well with a comfy robe. Some can even double as a labor or delivery gown.
