In a nutshell:

Based on thorough market research and hands-on testing by a pregnant mom in her third trimester, we chose the LAKE Pima Maternity Wide Leg Pajama Set as the best maternity pajamas overall. This set performed well in all testing criteria categories and stood out for its outstanding comfort and soft, breathable fabric.

Growing a human is a lot of hard work, so it’s no wonder expectant moms require a lot of rest. But between pregnancy insomnia, charley horses and middle-of-the-night bathroom trips, that’s easier said than done. With all the sleep challenges during pregnancy, you don’t want to add uncomfortable sleepwear to that list. A good pair of maternity pajamas can make a world of difference in nighttime sleep—and daytime lounging too.

During my first pregnancy, I thought I could get away with sleeping in just regular pajamas or my husband’s oversized t-shirts. While that worked for a little while, my rapidly growing baby bump soon proved me wrong. Now that I’m in my third pregnancy, I understand the importance of investing in a great pair of maternity pajamas. The best pregnancy PJs are made from breathable fabrics, accommodate your changing body throughout all three trimesters and offer functional features from adjustable waistbands to nursing-friendly necklines.

I tested eight top-rated maternity pajama styles for comfort, fit and quality to help expectant moms find the best style for their needs. Below, find my favorites.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Maternity Pajamas

Image: Diana S.

To help you pick out the best pregnancy PJs, we identified 13 of the most popular maternity sets and nightgowns on the market. We then created a shortlist of eight options, and I tested them all. Here’s more on how we developed this article:

  • During my third trimester of pregnancy, I wore and tested eight different styles of maternity pajamas ranging from casual lounge pants to hospital-friendly nightgowns. I wore and slept in the pajamas for two nights, then washed and dried according to the instructions before wearing them again for another night. After that, I thoughtfully evaluated the pajamas based on what parents value most in pregnancy pajamas: fit, fabric, comfort level, style and value for money.
  • We surveyed 350 new and expectant moms in The Bump community and asked them to share their feedback on the maternity pajamas they wore during pregnancy.
  • To see how these pajamas worked for various new moms, we conducted exhaustive market research, scouring forums and message boards and reading user reviews to find out what parents across the country looked for when choosing maternity sleepwear.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read about how The Bump develops and reviews all articles, including product reviews.

If you want to treat yourself or another expectant mom in your life to luxurious sleepwear, look no further than the LAKE Pima Maternity Wide Leg Pajama Set. From the moment I laid my hands on it, I was impressed by how invitingly soft this pajama set was, and I couldn’t wait to put it on. Pulling it onto my body and feeling it against my skin was such a treat; the fabric was smooth and breathable. These PJs are made from 100 percent Peruvian Pima cotton, a premium fabric known for its unique combination of softness and durability. As a result, this pajama set was both cozy and cooling, keeping me at the perfect body temperature sweet spot all night.

This pajama set fit true to size, and the waistband offered enough give to keep a growing belly comfortable, which I appreciated. Although these weren’t as stretchy as other pajamas I tested, there was enough material to feel comfortable and free as I slept. Even better, the top fit wonderfully, and the sleeves were the perfect length. It was long enough to cover my bump fully, and the scoop neckline had a natural and comfortable placement on my chest. I also didn’t feel the need to wear a sleep bra with these pajamas; they were comfortable and soft enough to forego it. A few other thoughtful details that stood out during testing are the arm cuffs, the pockets and the hidden snap placket, which makes these pajamas nursing-friendly as well.

If that’s not all, I loved was how opaque these pajamas were. I’d feel comfortable wearing these in front of visitors or if I were on vacation with family, so they’d be a great option for the hospital as well. While this set has a high price point, there’s no doubt that these PJs are premium-quality. All in all, they’re made out of incredibly soft, strong cotton, include lots of functional features and have a great design that’s fit for pregnancy. Cute, comfy, and functional—that’s all you could really ask for in maternity pajamas, and this set fits the bill.

Type: Pajama set | Size Range: XXS to XXL | Material: 100% Pima cotton | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; lay flat to dry

Our product tester says:

“I never felt too hot or too cold while wearing these, but rather just right. Tightness or restriction definitely wasn’t an issue with this loose and relaxed pajama set. Overall, these were amazing at temperature regulating while also making me feel cozy and secure.”

Best maternity pajama pants

LEGOE Heritage PJ Cloud Pant

LEGOE Heritage|$78
What We Love
  • Felt even softer after washing
  • Flattering over-the-bump fit
  • Matching top available
Things To Consider
  • High price point
  • Unique sizing system

Maternity pajama pants can be especially tricky to shop for since they need to accommodate a changing body and growing bump while remaining comfortable. That’s why the LEGOE Heritage PJ Cloud Pant is a complete game-changer. First, let’s talk about the fit. Though the pants were super long and drapey, they never felt like they were pooling on the ground or I was trampling on them. I loved how high the waistband went, and they fit comfortably over my (pretty huge) third-trimester bump. The elastic waistband and drawstring made it simple to adjust the tightness, and there was plenty of room for growth. Moreover, they were stretchy enough to pull on and off even when the drawstring was tied, which was nice and hassle-free for all those middle-of-the-night bathroom trips.

In terms of comfort, I can honestly say they are true to their name and feel very cloud-like. They’re made from a blend of rayon and spandex, which offered supreme comfort, whether I was wearing them day or night. Though they’re incredibly soft and ultra-stretchy, they also have really great shape retention, even after going through the washer and dryer. In fact, they became even softer and felt more “lived-in” after I washed them. Better yet, the material felt lightweight, breathable and helped keep me cool and comfortable. Overall, these achieved peak maternity comfort for me.

The style and design are worth mentioning, too. The flowy silhouette of the pant legs, along with the length, had an elongating effect that was so flattering and slimming on my body. I felt tall and slender during a time when I was anything but that! The grey color was beautiful, and there’s also a matching top option. To sum it up, these maternity pajama pants were clearly made with pregnant bodies in mind. They’re also very cute and flattering, so you not only feel good in them, you actually look good in them too. They might cost more than other options out there but you’ll get what you pay for in terms of quality, comfort and longevity.

Type: Pajama pants | Size range: XS to 4 | Material: 95% rayon/5% spandex | Care instructions: N/A

Our product tester says:

“These were the comfiest and coziest pajama pants I tried on! The soft jersey fabric draped beautifully over my body, offering plenty of stretch and movement for staying comfortable whether I was lounging or sleeping.”

Best under-the-bump maternity pajama pants

Kindred Bravely Aria Bamboo Casual Lounge Pant
Kindred Bravely Aria Bamboo Casual Lounge Pant
Image: Kindred Bravely
What We Love
  • No-dig waistband stays in place under or over bumps
  • Can be worn as pajamas and loungewear
  • Nice range of color options
  • Matching top available
Things To Consider
  • Long inseam length may not suit short moms

For a super-chic pair of pajama pants that’ll take you from day to night (and back to day again), you can count on the Kindred Bravely Aria Bamboo Casual Lounge Pant. They double as lounge pants you can confidently wear out and about, and I was a fan of the two-way style which could be worn over or under my bump. In both positions, the waistband was strong enough to stay put on the top of my hips and didn’t budge. When worn underneath my bump, the front part of the waistband also stayed put and didn’t roll. The no-dig waistband did its job well; it was snug but not restrictive, and the drawstrings made it easy to adjust the tightness.

Whether I was doing the nightly closing shift in my home or sleeping in them overnight, these pants did not disappoint in terms of comfort. They’re made from a buttery soft bamboo blend that was smooth, soft and cooling against my skin. I appreciated that they also felt thick and durable, while still being moisture-wicking and breathable. The temperature-regulating material made these very pleasant to sleep in, and the wide-leg silhouette allowed for lots of airflow. A note to shorter or petite gals: The inseam length is pretty long and might not be suitable for all heights, so that’s something to keep in mind.

These were my favorite maternity pants in terms of style. Honestly, I had a hard time choosing between the color options because they were all so trendy and neutral. I loved the wide-leg, flowy design of these pants; it gave them a casual boho vibe that could be worn outside to the beach, on coffee dates or as a comfortable but cute choice for running errands. Not only are they for the entire pregnancy, but they’ll also work for postpartum (and beyond) as pajama or lounge pants, so I’d be quick to recommend them to other expectant moms.

Best maternity nightgown

Kindred Bravely Riley Ribbed Bamboo Maternity & Nursing Nightgown
Image: Kindred Bravely
What We Love
  • Stretchy fabric
  • Hypoallergenic blend for sensitive skin
  • Nursing-friendly
Things To Consider
  • Length may be too short for tall moms

Whether you’re a hot sleeper or just prefer a little more freedom in your pregnancy PJs, nightgowns offer plenty of temperature regulation and movement. As someone who doesn’t normally wear nightgowns, the Kindred Bravely Riley Ribbed Bamboo Maternity & Nursing Nightgown left a really good first impression on me. This was one of my favorite fabric choices out of the pajamas I tested; I fell in love with the ribbed jersey knit fabric right away. It hugged my arms nicely and draped over my bump and body comfortably. The bamboo blend material is also naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, which makes it ideal for sensitive skin. Though long-sleeved, the material is lightweight and breathable enough to be worn on warmer nights. Plus, it wasn’t see-through at all.

Image: Diana S.

Now, a little bit about the fit. The nightgown had plenty of room and stretch around the bust due to the stretchy neckline. The gown fell smoothly over my third-trimester bump, which tells me it would’ve fit even better earlier in pregnancy and makes me excited to wear it postpartum. Speaking of which, I appreciated the Henley snap detail neckline which added to the nightgown’s style and will be a nursing-friendly feature when I begin my breastfeeding journey. One thing to consider is the length of this gown. While it was good enough for me on my 5’6 frame and hit around mid-thigh, I’d suggest taller ladies consider sizing up.

All things considered, I’d happily recommend this nightgown to other pregnant or postpartum moms who are looking for a comfy, cute and practical nightgown. Many expectant moms (myself included) are eager to find an alternative to those rough and scratchy hospital gowns—so I’m happy to say this one is coming with me in my hospital bag. It’s soft and stretchy fabric, attractive fit and overall look and functionality that’ll last throughout pregnancy and beyond.

Bonus: Use code KBBMP15 when checking out at Kindred Bravely for 15 percent off sitewide.

Type: Nightgown | Size range: S to 1X | Material: 97% viscose from bamboo/3% spandex | Care instructions: Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Our product tester says:

“I enjoyed wearing these as a lounge gown around the house during a lazy day and in the evening before bed. Overnight, it kept me at an optimal temperature—not too hot or cold. The soft material and stretchy fit combined with the attractive color and overall look made this a high-quality design.”

Best budget-friendly maternity pajamas

Auden Cloud Knit Short Sleeve Notch Collar Top and Cropped Pants Pajama Set
Image: Target
Buying Options
Target|$30
What We Love
  • Affordable price point
  • Flattering, stretchy fit
  • Nursing-friendly
Things To Consider
  • Not maternity-specific
  • Short inseam
  • Some styles sell out quickly

If you don’t want to spend a small fortune on pregnancy PJs, the Auden Cloud Knit Short Sleeve Notch Collar Top and Cropped Pants Pajama set is worth checking out. They’re the most affordable option we tested, and while they’re technically not maternity pajamas, this set will work well for most of your nine+ months. They’re made from a super soft and cozy modal blend, which I was a big fan of. Soft, stretchy and breathable, the thickness was just the right amount and didn’t make me too hot or cold overnight. However, given how cropped the pants are and the short-sleeved top, I’d say this set was better suited for summer or warmer nights.

Image: Diana S.

As for style and design, I loved the timeless aesthetic these pajamas offered. The collared button-down shirt, cropped and slightly flowy pants and the sophisticated striped pattern all got my seal of approval. I also saw at least three other color choices I would’ve been happy with when picking out these PJs. In fact, many reviewers mention buying multiple sets and mixing and matching them.

Since these PJs aren’t specifically designed for expecting moms, I’d suggest going up one or two sizes from your pre-pregnancy size, especially if you want them to fit comfortably in the third trimester. My bump was just on the verge of being too big for the top, but the bottoms fit well thanks to the adjustable, elastic waistband. While the top was snug on my third-trimester bump, it has nursing-friendly buttons, so I’m looking forward to wearing it during the fourth trimester. All that’s to say, these maternity pajamas definitely offer a lot of bang for your buck.

Type: Pajama set | Size range: XS to 4X | Material: 95% modal/5% spandex | Care instructions: Machine wash; tumble dry

Our product tester says:

“The soft and cozy material felt very comfortable to sleep in. The material was heavier with a bit of cling to it, which made the PJ set fully opaque and didn’t highlight any lumps or jiggles.”

Our community says:

Super soft, good quality, button down. Can wear whether nursing or pregnant! – Blake, Mom of a 2-month-old

What to Look for in Maternity Pajamas

If you want to stay as cozy and comfortable as possible during pregnancy, investing in a great pair of maternity pajamas is essential. Here are some important factors to consider when shopping for maternity pajamas.

Functionality

Maternity pajamas should be equal parts functional and comfortable. Don’t underestimate the power of practical features such as adjustable waistbands, pockets and (if you want to keep using them after baby arrives) nursing access.

  • Adjustable waistband. Every pregnancy and body is different, so an adjustable waistband is a super handy feature to have in maternity pajamas. A drawstring tie can be useful in tightening the waistband during the early stages of pregnancy. On the other hand, an elastic band can give you the option of comfortably wearing pajama pants under or over the bump in later stages.
  • Pockets. Need I say more? Pockets are a welcome addition to pregnancy pajamas. Use them to keep your hands cozy or store your phone (or, eventually, a pacifier).
  • Nursing access. Since pregnancy doesn’t last forever, it’s worth looking for maternity pajamas that can double as postpartum sleepwear. Many maternity pajamas have nursing-friendly necklines, such as buttons or hidden snap closures, which will increase their longevity and wear.

Style

Of course, you can’t shop for maternity pajamas without considering style and color options. It usually comes down to personal preference, but you’ll need to decide what type of pajama will suit you best and the overall look you’re going for.

  • Type of pajamas. Pajama sets offer full, cozy coverage while also looking put together. Many brands offer their tops and bottoms sold separately, so you can mix and match to further personalize your style. Maternity nightgowns are also a popular choice due to their loose fit and breathability. Plus, many have nursing-friendly necklines ideal for transitioning into postpartum. These also make great alternatives to hospital gowns during labor and birth.
  • Color options. Finding a color or print you love is important for feeling your best during pregnancy, too. Darker hues usually provide more coverage, while neutral colors can be more stylish and versatile.
